It looks like Audio-Technica recently introduced this stylus with black plastic instead of green (AT-VMN95EBK [amazon.com]). Perhaps the reason for the price drop is that they are phasing out the green version? Scratchhead

Judging from this side-by-side video [youtube.com], the 5E sounds brighter, sharper, livelier. Definitely more clarity in the treble. The bass and midrange sounded about the same to me.

Objectively, for the price, this deal cannot be beat. I bought one just as a backup because I don't see any vendor / manufacturer bringing out a decent cartridge (not just stylus!) for less than $49.

$49 was the normal price for this cartridge prior to 2021. If the prices ever drop to where they were pre-world crisis, they won't drop below that. Unless the demand collapses completely. But in that case most of us would have more important things to worry about.

TL;DR: This is a no-brainer deal for anyone having or foreseeing a need for a turntable stylus or cartridge. Worst case, for $50 you can always resell it on Facebook Marketplace.

Many digital albums are victims of the loudness wars so the lack of dynamics are built-in and can't be realized by the format. Many old records will sound better because the mastering on the digital releases are many times compromised, sadly. Thankfully Atmos mixes are fully dynamic, and a breath of fresh air as opposed to the stereo depressed dynamics.
