Personally, I prefer pre-cut quart bags as I use them more often than gallon size. You can get 400 quart bags (8" x 12") for only 6¢ per bag. That's as cheap as ziploc bags. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DH2JLP8B?amp=
This deal for Bonsenkitchen calculates to $1.55 per roll. That means the genuine FoodSaver roll is 635% more expensive. When there is that kind of disparity, I will always try the lower-cost item. If it does not work out, no big deal, since I did not spend a lot. But if it does work, the savings are enormous.
On June 14, I ordered three rolls of the Bonsenkitchen bags for $10.32 when they were on sale. This is obviously a much better deal. I have already used some, and so far, so good. I have not noticed them failing to hold a seal.
As a matter of fact, I think FoodSaver bags are outrageously expensive. They obviously do not make much money on the machines; their profit is in the bags you have to use. It is the same model that a lot of printer companies have used, where the printers were loss leaders and the replacement cartridges were the money makers.
p.s. Actually, I looked up a 2008 purchase of the FoodSaver brand bags and they cost $5.86 per roll, but those rolls were 18 feet long, not 16 feet long. With a 55.7% inflation rate since then, the 2026 cost of those rolls is $9.12, so the real increase is that you're paying more for less (shrinkflation), since there is a little over 11% less bag material these days for $9.84 per roll. However, I've had terrific results using the FoodSaver machine, I have had steaks frozen for over 6 years and they were fine.
The real deception is on some occasions they do list the mil thickness, but they are giving the mil thickness of the total of both sides of the bag or roll combined, without telling you it's the actual mil thickness deceptively doubled.
