I could see why someone today would think that but the animation was ahead of its time and the story was very unique. It was a non-conformist piece of media in Japan and was at its core a social commentary. It ended up being big enough to make anime bigger in the US too. I mean the Akira slide has made it into over 50 tv shows/movies. It is a highly influential and objectively a very important piece of Japanese media.

I am obviously not comparing them 100% but it's like when someone says Seven Samurai is overrated.

My uneducated opinion: 4k makes the foreground animations look worse, but those background mattes are in. credible. Sometimes I just pause a scene and stare at them.

Crunchyroll is not trustworthy. You wouldn't own the movie. They can remove it from your library at any moment and you'd have no recourse. Buy it Physically in 4k its worth it.
