8Bitdo Pro 2 is a versatile retro style wireless controller that stands out for Hall effect sticks, a comfortable grip, and broad compatibility across Switch and Switch 2 after a free firmware update. The included case adds real value, especially for anyone who would have bought one separately, and the battery compartment is a highlight because it accepts either the rechargeable pack or standard AA batteries. The main tradeoff is that the Pro 2 is still an older design with fewer extras than the Pro 3, and the case fits the controller only, not a dock. A practical pick for players who want flexibility and a backup pad.

Common Questions (3)

  • Yes. The Pro 2 battery is user-replaceable, and the compartment can take either a rechargeable battery pack or 2x AA batteries. That makes it easy to keep using the controller after the original pack wears out.

    HungryDavemuchnutlakimsa

  • Yes. The bundle includes a free case, and that case is useful enough that some buyers value it as part of the deal price. The case fits the controller itself, but not the dock.

    asukamuchnutlakimsa

  • Yes. It works on Switch and also on Switch 2, including Switch 2 games, after a free firmware update.

Love how they add hall effect and then give it a case. Almost trolling their past work.

Grips better but they picked awful colors to price discriminate. Same stuff under the hood otherwise.

All the old units intentionally didn't have hall effect and didn't come with cases so they would fail and you would have to buy again.

Planned obsolesence.
That's just not true. They've always offered a nice entry-level product with whatever bells and whistles were popular in the market at the time. At one point, a Bluetooth controller with a nice load and traditional shape was a novelty. Then they added the analog sticks. Then shifted to Hall-effect as the market changed and now they offer a TMR variant. I'm still using a first generation pro that's never suffered from any issues or stick-drift. They have increased prices with each iteration as the cost of parts has been higher. 8bitdo is just chasing the market trends and not trying to troll their own products.

Hall effect came out with the Saturn. They knew exactly what they were doing. No patents, dirt cheap.

Hard disagree, with no drift.

Yes you can replace the battery in the Pro 2. Alternatively you can use 2x AA batteries.

yeah this is the best part about the pro2, they designed the battery compartment to take a rechargeable battery pack OR standard AA batteries for when the battery pack eventually dies. With the pro3, looks like the trigger adjustment switch blocks where the battery cover used to be.

pro3 has too many features IMO, the pro2 is still my favorite and this price is what I paid before, but this bundle comes with a free case

Yes, it not only works perfectly on the Switch, but it even works on the Switch 2 (and Switch 2 games) after a free firmware update.

PS5 and Xbox controllers also don't have Hall effect joysticks.

Yeah, but they are first party. The bar is supposed to be higher for third parties.
