I have a few of these. They're neat for some games, but on the Switch they're practically useless because the d-pad movements don't register even in metroidvania style games.

FYI, I no longer have this controller but I did at one point. You can 'remap' the D pad to pretend it is an analog, according to google AI this is the method
"To remap the D-pad on your 8BitDo Zero (or Zero 2) controller to function as an analog stick, hold Select + D-Pad Left for 5 seconds. The LED will blink red to confirm the D-pad is now emulating the left analog stick. [1, 2] To map the D-pad for different functions or reset it, use these button combinations: [1, 2, 3]
Left Analog Stick: Press and hold Select + D-Pad Left for 5 seconds.
Right Analog Stick: Press and hold Select + D-Pad Right for 5 seconds.
Reset to Default D-Pad: Press and hold Select + D-Pad Up for 5 seconds. [1, 2]
Note: The LED will flash red when a successful map has been set. You must manually reset the D-pad back to normal using the up combination if you want to switch back. [1] Are you trying to map this controller for a specific game, emulator, or device (like a PC, Switch, or iOS device)? I can help with further remapping steps if needed."
FWIW, I was having this same issue last night with my Shanwan Q36 (very similar in concept) and used their method, afterwards analogs worked perfectly via the D-pad (of course as pure on / off inputs)
Edit: all that ranting aside (yet some more....), I personally prefer a controller with analogs even if a tiny bit less pocketable. The IINE Retro Pocket Wireless Game Controller is currently my go to for pocket controllers, especially because the sticks are recessed. So far works with my retro handhelds, windows laptop, and android tablet. The AceGamer Wireless Pocket Controller is also really cool but felt a little lower quality vs the iine (the iine doesn't have inline triggers so that was a slight plus for the AceGamer). Both are a little lower quality than the 8bitdo's but they can both be purchased for roughly $10-ish on AliExpress if you know how to use their coupon page. $15+ if you just buy via normal AE methods with coupons. *The coin page is a bear, take a bit of research to use it properly...
For lack of analogs; the Shanwan Q36 is pretty fantastic for the price, as is the iine Ananke. Honestly, I think the Ananke is better than the 8Bitdo Zero, especially the gen 2 (gen 1 still available and CHEAPER than the gen 1 if you don't need gyro, media controller, mouse functions) for the price and features.

90% of people who purchase this one are students that use them to study. So if you are reading bad reviews regarding their usability in games, it is because gaming is not the primary intention of this product.

What is the use case for study? Scrolling or turning pages?
LOL....most people are buying a video game controller from a company that makes VIDEO GAME accessories to "study?"
Please explain, we are all ears...and no, I don't believe that "90%" or even 10% are using them for flashcards ("Anki") as suggested by another user. Especially since there seems to be zero mention of that use case on the product page, which would be a huge omission for a company who makes "90%" of their supposed sales from that category of buyer.
*I think we just found grandma or grandpa that got conned by their grandkids into buying them a full scale video game setup so they could STAT prep
Go outside homie

I love 8BitDo stuff and I have this one. It's just... too small. The Mini is not much bigger, but feels so much better: https://www.amazon.com/8Bitdo-Mic...0CDG5HCCH/
(green one is on sale for $18.60)

*P.S. This seems to be the page Google AI is quoting https://forums.ankiweb.
