If you're inserting screws you're often going to want a magnetic bit extension, and one of those 3.5" bits inserted into a ~2" or longer bit extension makes for awkward/wobbly drilling.
You should also note that these are a P2R bit (instead of the standard P2), they're more specialized, and can be a looser fit with some common phillips screws. I like using them with drywall screws, primarily, but will use a standard P2 for a lot of other stuff.
My preference for 1" is primarily concerns for space and weight in my very compact installation bag. I carry an assortment of about 40 bits and use the entire range.
I bought the 3.5" 10 pack, which could last me 5 years or more. I'll buy a 50 or 100 pack of ph2 (1" insert) bits every year. I'm not hard on bits, but even with good technique, they are a wear item.
