You're putting a lot of stress on your HVAC system using a filter that is too "good".
Better off with an in-home air filter and using the cheap filters for your HVAC so it can work easier.

My mom's AC line was freezing up and house wasn't getting cool. The culprit- high MERV filters like this that are too restricting.

MERV 8 isn't a high filtering... Filter. For homes with pets or lots of activity, MERV 8 is a really good choice. Change monthly and it'll be fine. MERV 8 is the highest rated filter before there's considerable air restriction. MERV 5 tends to be fine for people without any crazy allergy issues and not a dusty environment.

If your Mom's AC was icing up with a MERV 8 like in this deal she has bigger issues. A MERV 8 works well in even older systems that never had AC and it was added later.

Seriously. MERV 8 isn't that high of a MERV #.

I felt the same way, but 1 hour after replacing, the system started working again and that was 2 years ago. MERV 7 - from a reliable company is what we are using now.
