Prices are rough out there if almost $50/TB is a deal. Two or three years ago refurbished 5 TB models could be snagged at about $60 each.

Not saying this is bad for current economic conditions, but just giving the comparison to prices in the past.

Same. I was picking up 4tb ssds for $160.... crazy how times change so fast

Hell I remember a few years ago I snagged my m.2 2tb for somewhere around $70-$80. Might get me a 512 now... this truly sucks

Worse, Microsoft recently increased the price of the Xbox because they expect memory and storage prices to double by Fall 2027.

Totally agree about the state of the market but it really isn't fair to compare new and refurbished HDD prices.

Unfortunately, looks like its mirroring what happened with the GPU market. Once the manufacturers enjoyed the high prices it never went back down.

Sadly, unlike memory where you can use it across different product lines, think video cards, memory chips for cars, circuit boards for electronics, where manufacturers have incentive to build new factories, I don't think the same applies to hard drive factories since its a more mature and older technology that is mostly just used in servers these days.

This is pure insanity pricing! This little turd should be/used to be about $9 per GB, now it's $50+ per and some of you kids think this is somehow a good deal!?!?!?!?!? This is what happens when you smoke crack folks, don't do it! And just because of AI blabla does NOT make this increase in value, but it will prove the lesser among us intellectual beings.
Good luck folks, this is a total sht deal that only a fool would accept.

I'm no economist, but when demand > supply, it does make things increase in value.

NO, it 100% does NOT!
Your belief that it does, that is the ONLY thing that changes! It still costs the exact same today to make a thing as it did yesterday, and with each passing day it literally costs less to make "most" things! But prices ONLY go up, because you are willing to pay that increased price! For NO other reason then that folks. I could charge you $1k per TB but it means nothing if no one will pay it! YOU control the market, and YOU must stop forgetting that fact.

totally agree. ai centers may have contributed to this ridiculous storage pricing lately, but people buying it at that crazy cost, make it worse. here it comes, "but what if i need a drive right now?" most people don't really need half of what they pretend they need saved on their hard drives. btw, the $95 price is still valid and not expired as it says above. based on price per tb, this 8tb is a better buy then the posted 2tb, if you really NEED one. https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Ex...8efb903409
