What's the toner situation on this bad boy? Is it easy to get/use generic toner?

Comes with a free toner subscription (yuk) trial.

"After the free trial period your credit card will be charged on a monthly basis for the Plan Fee, Overages, and Taxes in accordance with the Terms of Service. Overage fees will apply during free trial. Your service will continue on a month-to-month basis until you cancel it. May be canceled at any time. Upon cancellation, cartridge will be deactivated and must be replaced at users' expense in order to continue printing."

We purchased a similar Brother copier seven years ago. Still working. Word of advice, only buy their ink - TRUST ME. For under $80 you can buy a refill that lasts well over a year.

Yes. Generic toner units come with or without a chip. The ones without a chip require you to move the chip from the old toner cartridge to the new one. Not hard to do, but can be messy if the toner leaks out.

Also, there is a separate "drum" unit that has to be replaced. Not as often as the toner units, but it's a separate unit into which the toner units fit.

Generic toner units (TN830XL high yield / 3000 pages) with a chip are $35-45 for two -- so it's less than a penny per page to print.

The drum units, DR830, are $20-35 and last for about 15,000 pages -- sometimes longer, and the printer will alert you when it needs to be replaced.

Some prefer to buy bundled toner and drum units and replace them both at once. More expensive and wasteful, but less chance of printing issues.

These are workhorses and last a long time.

They have WiFi, Ethernet, and USB ports (USB is most reliable IMO and uses no power in deep sleep mode. Both Ethernet and especially WiFi use power in sleep or deep sleep mode).

The Brother scanner software is crap and buggy. Just use a different and better scanner software.

NAPS2 (Not Another PDF Scanner 2) is a free, open-source document scanning software for Windows, Mac, and Linux. It allows users to quickly scan documents and save them as PDFs, images (JPEG, PNG), or TIFFs. It features built-in OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to create searchable PDFs.

Note: no fax on this model if that matters.

Easy $15-20 fix: take out the OEM toner and replace it with a generic.

Thanks for confirming that it's possible to use generic toner on this model. Brother devices are usually pretty good about this, but I know some manufacturers try to lock you into OEM consumables only, and the toner subscription had me a little nervous that Brother was starting to get up to some of these shenanigans. Repped x 4 for the info! πŸ™‚

I've been using two of the very similar MFC-L2740DW printers for maybe 15 years with generic ink and drums. Solid, even with my kids.
