No, this is a freshwater reel. Using it in saltwater will rust the gears inside and a few months later it will be useless.

Look up this one: Ozark Trail Grit Stick Fishing Rod and Reel Spinning Combo, 7-foot Medium Heavy action 2-piece Fishing Rod, Size 5000 Reel, Left/Right Hand Retrieve, Grey with Orange

It's on sale for $24.95 in my area and its rated for saltwater. I'd swap the 12lb test for 15lb test line, but even with 12lb test, it will catch most fish off the pier up to 12-14lbs. If you plan on catching redfish or something larger, put the 15lb test line on it

It specifically says fresh water in the title, so I wouldn't recommend it. We got a Shakespeare combo at our local Walmart that has been fine for throwing an occasional line while out crabbing.

Why is 18% off a Walmart house-brand fishing reel combo a Frontpage deal?? It's not a good product (see youtube) and not a big discount.

Sales commission, see the OP. This thing was pushed to front page numerous times in the past couple of months. I paid $25 for this during last Black Friday when they were 50% off and they are worth around that price. I returned the 6ft6 and 7ft one but kept the ultralight one.

These are some great tips. I will say, don't discard the 12lb line completely. Keep about 1/4-1/3th of the spool of that 12lb line and use it as mono backing. Then put 20lb quality x8 braid and use around 18inch of 15-20lb mono leader depending on which fish you are targeting. 20lb braid will allow you to cast a mile. It may sound complicated at first for a beginner but trust me you will need that extra yds of casting distance when fishing from pier. You will also learn some knots in doing this.
