This album is a victim of the "loudness war." It has compromised sound quality, due to an excessively compressed dynamic range, leading to audible distortion.

Eh, better than St. Anger...but that says incredibly little lol. All increasingly downhill after the Black Album...

Everything after And Justice For All are like Alien 3. Just pretend it never happened.

I like a good amount of their post AJFA stuff, but you have to think of it like it's a completely different band.

Either way, Metallica is a band that still sells out arenas solely based on the material they put out 35+ years ago.

Absolute trash recording, nothing but distortion. I would not even take this for free.

AJFA was peak except for the recording /mix of it.

That said, the black album is a sonic masterpiece, dramatically better recorded and mixed than anything they did before. Nothing Else Matters is a very very strong song. Sad But True still holds up. While none of it is as good as AJFA, it is still a very important album and required listening unlike everything after it.

Didn't people extract the songs from the guitar hero game where songs didn't suffer from the bad compression issue?

I like this record, but I do wonder what it would sound like if it were not brickwalled. Not sure why they did that. Hardwired and 72 Seasons much better mixes.
