Super Mario RPG on Switch is a charming, short, and easygoing remake that keeps the original's appeal while adding smoother movement, responsive turn based combat, and timed inputs that can boost damage. The graphics feel refreshed, and the familiar characters and Bowser sections add to the cozy, playful tone. The main drawback is the much lower difficulty, with normal attacks and splash damage making the game feel far easier than the original, though boss rematches still add some challenge. The price also looks high versus recent sales in the $15 to $20 range.
The game can be completed in about 10-15 hours while staying fun throughout.
The turn-based combat can feel responsive without the turn-based delays seen in some Mario and Luigi or Paper Mario RPGs.
Boss rematches can provide fun fights that feel harder than the main game.
The story and gameplay can work well for a shared watch experience while still being enjoyable.
The combat mechanics can make normal attacks hit all enemies when timed well, which can make the game feel way too easy.
The battle system can be simple and shallow, with difficulty described as having absolutely zero difficulty level.
The game's price can be questioned because it has reportedly appeared in the $15-20 range multiple times over the past year.
Splash damage concerns can reduce purchase interest after learning about the issue.
