I have not pulled the trigger yet but will certainly consider r8w, not sure whether they upgraded other hardware besides adding the wifi capability, hopfully someone more familiar with these things could share some info.

This is a good deal. I went with this detector at 5% off back in May for my travels around the country in June. With this detector and the Highway Radar app it can connect with, I believe I avoided 3 speeding tickets.

I'm still using the R3, and still going strong. At some point I'll upgrade to a directional arrow Uniden version.

But between the R3 and Waze, I've been pretty much covered (knock on wood). Going to hold out on upgrading for now.

I bought this about a year ago for a little less, but cannot imagine driving without it. The rare occasion I drive my partners car I really miss it. Radar detectors are a device dependent on trust, meaning getting a cheap radar detector which doesn't work well (or at all!) is actually worse than not having one, because you are lulled into a false sense of security. Uniden supports and updates their products long term. One or two tickets avoided over the life of the device and it's paid for, not to mention added personal safety, anticipation of traffic situations ahead, etc and for me a device like this is a no brainer.

Anything in that $200 range I would not trust. Better off saving that and using Waze app. Or perhaps finding the big brand detectors on fbook marketplace for the price range you need.

The issue isn't just a quality drop from going with a 200$ detector. One of the main things you're paying for with 400$ + detectors is K band filtering. Over the past 15 years or so, adaptive cruise and blind spot monitoring systems have exploded on cars so a cheaper detector without K band filtering is going to drive you insane with false alerts. Now most law enforcement uses Ka band and some detectors allow you to turn K band off but that's still one hell of a gamble. The stationary speed cameras and boxes all still use K band.

To properly answer your question though, a Cobra RAD 700i for 260$ is the cheapest you'd want to bother with new. Or a used Uniden R3.
