Mostly agree...but it's still better than paying full freight if you actually have restaurants you normally would patronize anyway...at least here in LA there are a decent selection of places.

It sucks that you can no longer stack discounted GCs with their in-app offers. This used to be the best way to get massive discounts that sometimes would even allow triple dipping...

the enshittification is real, but you're still getting 35% off a meal, tips aside. That is real. In NYC, there are hundreds of restaurants on the list, from coffee shops all the way up to michelin rated restaurants. Just because the golden days of often paying 20 bucks for a $100 meal because of the promos and everything else stacking are gone doesn't mean the ship is sinking. I get immense value from this. I finally looked up how this works when I used mine for the first time this weekend.

Restaurants sell inKind big blocks of dining credit upfront at a discount, in exchange for cash they don't have to pay back as debt (inKind buys restaurant credit at ~50% off, resells it to you at 30-35% off). Restaurants "disappearing" just means their credit batch ran out (it's financing, not a subscription); inKind already made their margin before that happened. Real risk for them is a restaurant closing before the credit's used, not the discount itself.

Yep that's exactly how it works. We have a local pizza place we really like that is on there so grabbing one of these will be easy to use. I know a BBQ place in our area went out of business and owed InKind $1.5 million.

Stayed in River North in Chicago. Multiple restaurants took it. Pretty sweet seeing a bill for $98 and paying with InKind funds that only cost me $65.

One restaurant in my area was added to the inKind network and only about a month later, just disappeared. I happened to walk by and it was closed in the middle of a Saturday, with all furniture removed. Curious, I checked their social media page and it just went dark. No farewell, no closing announcement. I'm not sure if there is a sort of trial period. But this could be a prime example showing there is definitely risk on IK's part -- the risk of the counterparty entering into the agreement in bad faith, never intending to fulfill their obligation in the first place, simply taking the funds, closing the store, and up and run away with the money.

Inkind can't be that dumb. They wouldn't give 1.5 million to a 1 location BBq place, and even if they did, not all at once. Maybe I can ask them for 2 mill for my hole in the Wall, and close shop the following day.
