And false. Garbage disposals don't have sharp blades; they have blunt metal "impellers" or lugs that sling food against a perforated grind ring. Ice just does a fantastic job of blasting away the gunk stuck to them. Add some salt and line and it even smells better.

Or just load it up with ice and grind it up. Flush it with soapy water and voila.

I disagree with this - egg shells are one of the things that you should NOT put in disposal. Tons of articles are out there as to why it's a bad idea.

This disposal cleaning brush is best for scraping stubborn gunk from the top, sides, and other hard to reach spots that ice alone may miss. The brush is described as useful for heavy buildup and as a handy tool with multiple uses, especially when odors come from stuck grime rather than the grinding parts themselves. Ice, lemon, vinegar, baking soda, and citrus peels are also cited as effective cleaning tricks. The main limitation is that some buildup can still require manual scrubbing, and the splash guard may need separate attention.

Common Questions (3)

  • A brush can scrub the top, sides, and other spots where sludge or grime sticks, which ice may not reach. For heavy buildup, manual scraping and brushing are needed; ice, fruit pits, or citrus can help with odor but may not remove thick deposits.

  • Odors can come from grime stuck on the disposal walls or from the underside of the black rubber splash guard. Scrubbing those areas directly helps, and ice with lemon or citrus peels can also freshen the unit.

  • Yes. It is also useful as a baby bottle brush-style cleaner, and one comment notes it can be repurposed for compost-related cleanup. That makes it more versatile than a disposal-only tool.

The number one source of disposal smells is actually the underside of the black rubber splash guard in your drain. Take it out and scrub it.

The people that lived in our house before us must have used the disposal for bigger things than I ever have and not run the water through well to clear it out after use so there was a huge amount of gunk built up in the top of the disposal cylinder. Like an inch thick, it was disgusting and smelled terrible. No amount of ice (or I even had recommended to me using fruit pits that fly around in there and ultimately get grinded up) would remove it. I had to reach in and scrape it off manually. So gross. The grinding pieces and the vanes in the cylinder usually stay pretty clean--it's the areas where food gets deposited in other areas that sometimes need a scrubbing.

Most plumbers, would caution against garbage disposals. They can lead to clogs and plumbing issues. Instead, consider composting food waste.
