And false. Garbage disposals don't have sharp blades; they have blunt metal "impellers" or lugs that sling food against a perforated grind ring. Ice just does a fantastic job of blasting away the gunk stuck to them. Add some salt and line and it even smells better.

I disagree with this - egg shells are one of the things that you should NOT put in disposal. Tons of articles are out there as to why it's a bad idea.

The number one source of disposal smells is actually the underside of the black rubber splash guard in your drain. Take it out and scrub it.

The people that lived in our house before us must have used the disposal for bigger things than I ever have and not run the water through well to clear it out after use so there was a huge amount of gunk built up in the top of the disposal cylinder. Like an inch thick, it was disgusting and smelled terrible. No amount of ice (or I even had recommended to me using fruit pits that fly around in there and ultimately get grinded up) would remove it. I had to reach in and scrape it off manually. So gross. The grinding pieces and the vanes in the cylinder usually stay pretty clean--it's the areas where food gets deposited in other areas that sometimes need a scrubbing.
