And false. Garbage disposals don't have sharp blades; they have blunt metal "impellers" or lugs that sling food against a perforated grind ring. Ice just does a fantastic job of blasting away the gunk stuck to them. Add some salt and line and it even smells better.

Or just load it up with ice and grind it up. Flush it with soapy water and voila.

I disagree with this - egg shells are one of the things that you should NOT put in disposal. Tons of articles are out there as to why it's a bad idea.

This disposal cleaning brush is best for scraping stubborn gunk from the top, sides, and other hard to reach spots that ice alone may miss. The brush is described as useful for heavy buildup and as a handy tool with multiple uses, especially when odors come from stuck grime rather than the grinding parts themselves. Ice, lemon, vinegar, baking soda, and citrus peels are also cited as effective cleaning tricks. The main limitation is that some buildup can still require manual scrubbing, and the splash guard may need separate attention.

  • The brush can help scrub sludge or grime stuck on disposal blades and sides that can cause foul odors.

    CyanStranger4421

  • The brush can be useful when food deposits build up in areas that ice and fruit pits cannot fully remove.

    Dre325

  • The brush is described as having multiple uses beyond disposal cleaning.

    NedStone

  • The brush may be a practical alternative to ice-only cleaning for reaching areas ice cannot reach.

    WooHoo2You

  • Ice-only cleaning can be argued to dull impellers over time when used frequently.

    WooHoo2You

  • Some routines report no odor issues without cleaning the disposal interior, so the brush may seem unnecessary.

    MajorDizaster

  • Ice-only cleaning is challenged by claims that it cannot clean the top and sides of the disposal.

    WooHoo2You

  • The brush may not remove heavy gunk buildup in the cylinder top without manual scraping.

The number one source of disposal smells is actually the underside of the black rubber splash guard in your drain. Take it out and scrub it.

The people that lived in our house before us must have used the disposal for bigger things than I ever have and not run the water through well to clear it out after use so there was a huge amount of gunk built up in the top of the disposal cylinder. Like an inch thick, it was disgusting and smelled terrible. No amount of ice (or I even had recommended to me using fruit pits that fly around in there and ultimately get grinded up) would remove it. I had to reach in and scrape it off manually. So gross. The grinding pieces and the vanes in the cylinder usually stay pretty clean--it's the areas where food gets deposited in other areas that sometimes need a scrubbing.

Most plumbers, would caution against garbage disposals. They can lead to clogs and plumbing issues. Instead, consider composting food waste.
