"goodwill, garage sale find" is a bit disingenuous and it clearly says "open box" so please don't encourage him/her. Open box is likely a customer return that has been evaluated to some degree by BestBuy. Hardly the beat up relic you'd be likely to find at a yard sale.

FWIW, I've gotten an open box MacBook Air from Best Buy before and it came with 1 battery cycle and Apple Care. It's returnable anyway if you get a crap one.

It is used. I just got an used 15" MacBook air m4/32GB/512GB at $850 from local market, with applecare+ until 7/1/2029.

Probably the one I just returned. It was listed as "like new" but had 93 charge cycles and scratches all over and came without the listed charger.
