The Kershaw Camshaft is a budget pocket knife that stands out more for the brand and low price than for premium steel. The knife gets praise as a solid everyday carry and even a favorite in some Kershaw collections, with the blade looking new after use. The 4Cr14 steel is described as easy to sharpen and fairly rust resistant, but it also brings weaker edge retention than steels like 8Cr13MoV, 14C28N, or D2. That makes it a practical beater if you value simple maintenance over long lasting sharpness.

  • Knife buyers comparing budget steels, because this model can be a reasonable pick when they want simple sharpening and acceptable stainless performance.

  • People wanting a beater pocket knife for opening boxes, because the blade is easy to sharpen and the low price makes it a low-stakes everyday cutter.

  • Shoppers who prioritize rust resistance over edge retention, because 4Cr14 is less likely to rust than 8Cr13MoV.

  • People who want long edge retention for frequent box opening, because the blade can go dull after a few cuts and needs sharpening more often.

  • Knife buyers expecting premium cutting performance, because the steel is described as low quality compared with higher-end options.

  • Shoppers who dislike frequent sharpening, because the lower carbon steel trades easier sharpening for needing touch-ups more often.

This knife is only $10 and has even better edge retention but will be harder to re-sharpen. D2 steel is great but can rust. The blade coating protects against that though. I have D2 blades without a coating and still never had any rust issues with them. 14C28N is also stronger but you really should not use your pocket knife as a pry bar anyway.

Thanks!! My favorite knife is a D2 Kershaw Layup with crossbar lock and that Ozark looks like 80% of the knife for 20% of the price. Seems like a great beater knife for $10.

"Made from high-performance 4Cr14 blade steel"
Yeah, okay. There are few steels that are actually worse.
Come on it's "high performance" 4cr. Not just regular old 4cr🤣

My 2 cents:

This knife is just another AMZ "deal" knife that uses low carbon steel. Like most ~0.4% carbon content knives, it's great until you use it to open the next SD box of joy from AMZ, or 3, after which you're left holding a butterknife.

How I do a rough apples-to-apples comparison between budget EDCs. (YMMV)

1) Edge retention. I use a minimum ~0.7% carbon content (14C28N at 0.62% I include) as a starting criterion. A dull blade is a liability. Since I don't have an unnatural love for knife sharpening, I ignore all sub 0.5% AMZ "slick" deals.

2) Toughness. More complicated due to multiple factors going into the aggregate. Basically, a CPM30V and above rating. Most well-known EDC stainless steels qualify. AUS-8 and 440C are a couple decent options. Not optimal, but they represent reasonable compromises with the other two major areas of concern, and they are readily available at value prices. 14C28N is another.

3) Corrosion resistance. This is my lowest bar to cross. Stainless steel is good, higher (11%+) Chromium is gravy. I don't leave my EDCs outside for months, on my boat, or go swimming with them. The 1% difference in chromium between the 4Cr14 and the 8Cr13Mov is negligible, and definitely not worth a ~50% carbon loss.

Everyone has different priorities for the above 3 categories, plus you can add in "ease of sharpening" and "hardness" categories as well, but I mainly use these three. Most important, research everything for yourself. I could be a politician!!! vomit

(Caveat: Specific manufacturing procedures and processes is too long a convo to have here.)

TL; DR - This knife is not a good value, and the "Kershaw" name alone doesn't change that.

Good Luck!

While I appreciate Kershaw, it's no Benchmade. The steel in these is pretty bunz. Just sayin…

Yeah, I like their lock on the Iridium.

The only issue with the Ozark knife is it makes you wonder why you paid so much for your other knives.

For clarity, you mean this 4Cr14 steel is inferior to the other alloys you mentioned, yes? All-around worse, or specific properties e.g. worse edge retention but maybe easier to re-sharpen?
Others have already posted good input, but I mean 8cr is already very easy to sharpen.

For the cheaper Chinese stainless steels, the first number such as 4 or 8 indicate the carbon content. The higher the number generally indicates you will have better edge retention, ie you will have to sharpen it less, but in turn more it becomes more likely to rust. All are fairly easy to sharpen. Frankly now that 14c28n can be had for $20 at Walmart, I would always choose it over the Chinese budget steels, 420, Aus-8 or any of the gas station knife steels. It is superior in every way. https://www.walmart.com/ip/FOLDIN...5270773601
Thanks for your explanation. Previously I had no idea what the numeric format means...

What about this blade, a Flissa brand? https://www.walmart.com/ip/FLISSA...martBanner
It's only $2 more over the Ozark Trail you suggested, might just be a little bit heavier due to the metal bits..

Just be aware of the difference in heat treatment, not all D2 is created equal and sometimes even for the samr product between different batches.

Everyone has an opinion, but I love 4116 knives and most steel snobs hate them. They are tough as hell, stainless, never chip, and are easy to sharpen in the field.

Buy what you want..Its your f@#$&_g money! Any frontiersman Or Viking would love to have what we snob over now.
