Amazon Smart Thermostat is ENERGY STAR® certified. Easily switch your traditional thermostat and help reduce energy usage. For on-the-go comfort, let Alexa set the temperature, or set it yourself from anywhere with the Alexa app. Amazon Smart Thermostat is compatible with most 24V HVAC systems (like conventional force air, heat pump, radiant boilers, etc). It does not work with 110-240V HVAC systems (like electric baseboard heat). Smart Thermostats require a C-wire (most homes have one) or a C-wire adapter kit (sold separately). This device is fully dependent on cloud, if AWS is down, you lose most of controls (no full featured local control like Ecobee / Honeywell)
Interesting, but are you certain this is true? The model is a Honeywell branded for Amazon, and all the research that I've done says even if AWS is down, your schedules will still run locally, and you can still use the wall mounted controls.

I have 2 of these, and last time my internet went out I didn't have any issues controlling it from the unit. Obviously phone/voice control will not work.

I don't think that's true. I've had three of these in my house for about 4 years now. I've never been unable to use them via old-fashioned manual control. Sure, you may lose app or remote control if the the cloud is down, but you can always walk over to the thermostat and turn them up or down as long as you have power. (And if you don't have power, there's no AC to control anyway.)
