This ZIPAIR one way fare to Tokyo stands out as a cheap way to get to Japan, especially from West Coast and select U.S. cities. The real savings are on the outbound, while return flights from Japan are often much pricier, sometimes sold out or pushing the total trip close to regular sale pricing. Summer travel also comes with brutal heat, humidity, and mosquitoes, though October is described as much more comfortable. Onboard Wi Fi is also unreliable, so downloading entertainment ahead of time makes sense.
Common Questions (4)
The one-way fare is cheap, but the return leg is often much higher, with estimates around $260 to $900+ depending on dates. That can put a round trip around $585 to nearly $1,000, and checked bags can push it higher.
Tokyo summer can be very hot and humid, with temperatures around 95°F and 95% humidity, plus mosquitoes. October is described as much more comfortable, with temperatures in the 70s and lower humidity.
Several trip costs have gone up, including departure tax, JR Pass pricing, hotel rates, and entry fees for tourist sites. One comment also notes Japan tripled its departure tax as part of overtourism measures.
The onboard Wi‑Fi can be difficult to get working, so it should not be treated as essential for the trip. Download anything you need in advance before boarding.

We even have a NS flight to Taipei from PHX
Departure tax, JR Pass (trains), hotel prices, entry fees to tourist sites, etc -- pretty much everything related to tourism in Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto has gone up in price over the past year.

Prices for everything in Japan have gone up for everyone in Japan because of the tourists despite the weakening yen. Many locals have been priced out of domestic travel for quite some time now, but it's not just limited to travel. Every facet of life has gone up in price. Hell, the onigiri and chicken at conbini has nearly doubled in 3 years and it's up 50% in 1 year. That affects locals much more than tourists.
