You transfer the Series X/S games (eg. GTA 6) to these drives for storage, but you cannot play off them directly. Trying to play a game will make the Xbox transfer the game back to the internal storage before you can play them. Go for the expansion cards by WD or Seagate if you want to load them directly.
You can store and play Xbox One (eg. Red Dead Redemption 2) and earlier games from an external drive.

For me I use them on my Xbox 360s since 2tb is the max it recognizes.
