You couldn't pay me to take another Amtrak, especially for a long distance trip. Went from NY to VA and it was the most uncomfortable ride ever. On top of all that, a blind guy tried to use the bathroom and he stood up to pee it got everywhere.

I checked the fare between Hartford and Philadelphia. The price is about the same you got the rest of the year. Is there any coupon?

"Up to 30% off" can mean 0% off in certain circumstances.

a Blind guy could do that on a plane too with tiny bathroom, infact it is more likely. Think about the towels you use at hotels, god knows what they were used for.

The worst nightmare riding an Amtrak is when a train loses power and you are stuck in an unventilated train full of people while it's 100 outside (it can take hours before the power is restored). Amtrak policy doesn't allow passengers to open the door or disembark in that situation. Toilets overflow with no power, people vomit and pass out from heat. Happens more frequently than you think.

The fares fluctuate and increase as seats disappear and the date approaches, just like with airlines. They occasionally overbook. There is nothing particularly on sale here. I had to book Philly to New York for next week, as I do most weeks. Saw normal prices.

I just did Amtrak from Miami this week. It was 28 hrs, there was an a/c problem in my car for 2 hrs near Jacksonville, FL -- the condensers had to be thawed out. The train cars are old, but there is plenty of leg room. I was able to travel with my bicycle and 2 bags. It is what it is.

Check the DEALS> EVERYDAY DISCOUNTS section to see if you qualify for reduced fares.

The fare sale is for Aug 1 to Sep 30, so next week isn't covered in their sale. Smilie

Also, you've taught me something new today--I didn't know they overbook on certain "unreserved" routes. A ticket does not mean a seat on those trains, it merely means transportation.

Haha, you're right on the dates. I got distracted, but do have to book some things into August. Something else to note: the sale fares are only 50% refund if cancelled. Amtrak is usually 70% refunded on a value fare, but I sometimes pay a few extra bucks for the 'flex' fare because my travel is work-related and dependent on client schedules that are outside of my control.

Amtrak doesn't sell reserved seats on anythting other than business class. Coach is non-reserved so if you travel with kids, better look for something alternative.

Was literally just on a southwest flight that had no AC
