i dont understand, it will work off of 12v, so why convert the car power to 30v?

It won't work on 12v with the long cord (50'?) it comes with because the voltage drop is too much across that distance. It does work at 12.4v (what my car often puts out) using a 6' cord. I've also read, but haven't personally confirmed, that connection performance is faster and more stable at higher (20+) voltages than at 12-14.

Car power ports can generally provide 150W, this provides a maximum of 60W (maybe slightly more due to inefficiencies).

Edit: If you add in the full 45W of USB output power then its 105W but still well under the 12-15A limit car power ports are fused to.
