This evay store has been coming up with decent refurbished stuff in this market. I didn't think I would get excited to see a handheld a couple years old for $700, but here we are.

Great find.

I can't comment on the price, but can vouch for the device.
I ran windows on it for 2-days, then switched to SteamOS and haven't looked back. Some prefer Bazzite. Runs all the retro games I want (haven't tried anything beyond Switch 1).

Also, easy upgrade to 2TB using 2280 nvme. Also, not gonna comment 2TB pricing…

This has bigger battery, and more ram. And it supports 2280 nvme

I bought this when it was released and have been dual booting windows/bazzite since launch. I used to bring it when traveling instead of a laptop, but I put a 4tb 990 pro in it back when those were affordable and now I'm afraid of it getting lost lol. It's been a little workhorse for gaming and simple computer tasks.

The Z1 Extreme is lacking an NPU, so it will be a poor choice to run AI models.

That's not true.

Most models currently don't run on NPU. They run on the GPU.

I'd say so. Xbox Ally is weak, unless you get the Xbox Ally X version. Both the Ally X and Ally Z1E is close to Xbox Ally X in performance., but the X has 24GB of RAM over the Z1E, and same as Xbox Ally X.

Personally I also like the form factor better, but Xbox Ally is supposedly a lot more comfortable.

Yeah, absolutely. Oddly enough the rog ally z1e is better in performance than the Xbox ally. This is better in performance than either of them. While it has the same CPU as the rog ally z1e, the 24 GB of ram and better battery is a notable upside.plus 1tb SSD is a great start

REALLY tempting. I already have the OLED deck and also had the OG ally while I hated the windows on it, the extra horsepower was a nice to have and the screen was great too, now I am considering getting rid of the deck and getting this, because it fixes the biggest drawback the og ally had which it was the poor battery life.

The one big issue with SteamOS/Bazzite is modding sucks for anything not on Steam Workshop. You can definitely make it work, on a handheld it is significantly more of a pain to do so compared to a standard desktop environment.

This can run SteamOS on it just fine. It's one of the earliest if not the earliest device to get SteamOS support outside of the Deck. Lack of OLED is unfortunate, but form factor, performance and VRR makes up more than enough for it. The Deck is so underpowered by today's standard unfortunately.
