No license is needed to listen. A license is needed for normal, every day transmissions. However, in a true life-or-death emergency, no license is needed for any type of transceiver.
How hard is it to get a license? VERY easy. $35 and a multiple choice test. An 8-year-old in our radio club passed three exams to get the highest license possible. And she even learned Morse code! Yeah... Both of her parents have licenses and helped her study.

Because the Apple is currently planning to only give a 2 yr complimentary period and then will be charging a fee. DRM has no cost for tier 1 while tier 2 and higher require you to get your FCC ham radio operator license and if for commercial use then a paid spectrum I think

They said that when I got my iPhone 15 Pro 3 years ago but it's still free (notice Apple dropped any time limits in its support document https://support.apple.com/en-us/105097). It's one of those things every time someone is saved by this it justifies the cost of keeping free as a promotional tool.

Edit: Also, Globalstar (Apple's Partner) was recently acquired by Amazon and part of the deal (since Apple owned part of Globalstar) was to keep this free for current iPhones (14-17 and maybe 18) that use Globalstar's satellites, as future iPhones will use Amazon's Leo Satellite Network at a possible undisclosed cost but will be more capable.

not sure why the down votes this the quickest path to learn and filter out obsolete community information and even have it build you a guide and scripts for later reuse, OGs just drinking hateraid and going to be left behind.
