This Frigidaire through the wall air conditioner is best suited for places where a mini split is not practical, especially apartments, rentals, condos, RVs, and other spaces with existing wall sleeves. The price is described as strong for what it is, and the unit can be a straightforward replacement when the wall opening and electrical setup already match. Through the wall designs are also seen as more efficient than window units because they seal better and move air through the rear. The main drawbacks are the heavy, expensive nature of these units and the need to confirm the 230 volt cord and outlet fit before installing.

  • Renters in apartments or condos with existing wall sleeves, because through-the-wall installation fits spaces where mini-splits or window units are impractical.

  • Homeowners replacing a broken through-the-wall unit, because it can slide into an existing sleeve and avoid a costly new mini-split install.

  • RV and mobile-home owners without standard windows, because these units fit places where mini-splits cannot be installed and window units are unavailable.

  • People cooling open living areas, because the unit can work well after a wall opening and wiring update.

  • Homeowners planning a new cooling install, because mini-splits are easier to fit and usually deliver a better installation outcome.

  • Shoppers expecting a lightweight portable unit, because through-the-wall models are very heavy.

  • People without the correct 240V outlet or cord end, because replacement installs need matching electrical compatibility.

People who use these already have through the wall air conditioners installed. You are correct that for a brand new installation mini splits are superior though have a more intricate installation. You're not going to be able to install a mini split easily if you're on the 12th floor of an apartment building for example.
Exactly. I own a twin single with through the wall air conditioners in front of the houses. No place to put the outdoor condenser unit of mini splits except on the driveways or front porches.
Further for those intending to replace a unit, you need to pay attention to what kind of cord end this unit has and the outlet you already have.

I have a 12k 120v one of these I can't even give away since I upgraded to heat pumps. They're just too heavy.

Yeah,no way. with a hole in the wall-the next person will have to patch and then cover it up with a picture.

These are great if you're renting and that's what your apartment/condo or town house has. My dad's condo had a wall fitting for one of these. And when I lived in base housing in Rhode Island, that's what they had. One upstairs and one down in the living room.

Just make sure if you need a 240V or 120v unit

If it fits your use case, not too bad of a deal.

Edit. I had one still in storage after moving home and buying an older house. One of the central air units went out on the non bedroom side of the house so instead of replacing that old unit, I just framed an opening in the wall, installed a sleeve and slid this in. An updated breaker and 30' feet a wire later, I have a wifi controlled AC, with backup heat, that is way more efficient that the older center air system. Works great for open spaces like my use case.

Isnt that very energy inefficient because window units suck outside air through side slits and push through back to cool the radiator. Putting window AC into wall will suck instead house air through the wall then push that outside.

These in-Wall AC you can see has sealed sides to prevent the energy loss. it cools radiator though the back only. made differently.
yep. through the wall A/Cs suck in outside air into the unit from the rear (usually from the edge of the back) to blow over the condenser coils. it's why in the installation instructions you are supposed to install a vertical divider if the wall sleeve is longer than the A/C you are installing so the fan doesn't suck in air that was pushed off the hot condenser coils and back over the coils again. the outside sleeve louvered cover (rear) will have the vertical louvers angled in different directions to account for this...so the air off the condenser coils will blow to, say, the left, and the air gets sucked in from the right. just due to the space constraints though, the air still gets mixed which lowers efficiency naturally. it is what it is. but yeah, they do account for this

putting a window AC in a wall sleeve prevents adequate air flow over the condenser, meaning the heat can't dissipate. efficiency drops and it can even result in compressor failure with time

To install this, you need to dig a super big hole in wall?
Yes, but you cut not dig the hole in the wall.
