Community Reviews

The TX NR7100 stands out as a strong budget receiver for 9.2 channel home theater, especially if you want Dirac Live and solid Atmos performance at a low price. The deal is framed as unusually cheap versus recent pricing, and the receiver is praised for good sound, enough power for moderate listening, and good value compared with pricier RZ30, RZ50, and Denon options. The main cautions are the reported power limiting protection mode, no pre amp outs, and only three HDMI 2.1 ports. It also lacks independent sub outputs and Bass Control support, so it fits best with efficient speakers and modest power demands.

Sensitive speakers are what this receiver is made for given the partnership Onkyo has with Klipsch. I was able to snag one for $450 and I'm going to try it out with my Klipsch but if I had less sensitive speakers like anything below 90 db efficiency I probably wouldn't even have bought it knowing that it goes into limp mode. Limp mode is a very real issue this receiver faces and that's why they brought the rz30 to directly replace it because they both share the exact same specs but the rz30 pushes through. But for $450 with sensitive speakers limp mode doesn't matter because Klipsch will probably never use more than 30 watts max if that. Just don't buy it trying to use Polk or something 85 db efficient because then the sound quality will drop out.
I dont know since I never owned the RZ30

But, the information on ASR is not kind to the RZ30 either...to that end they say the X3800 is just slightly better in performance...amp/power supply wise...than the RZ30

But again, one needs to consider the price points

I have never owned the X3800 either. I did personally own the Denon X4800 and got rid of it for the Marantz Cinema 30

You don't 'hear' your amp only delivering 15% of it's rated power, LOL.You lose dynamic range.[Warning, Pulp Fiction spoiler] So you will certainly 'hear' when the gunshot goes off in the car, but it won't have the same impact at 20w as it would at 150w of clean power.
Yeah, limp mode is definitely real but it all depends on how efficient your speakers are. People that don't have issues are mostly the ones using anything from Klipsch because the receiver doesn't even break a sweat powering them. But people using Polk is a different story.

Klipsch has a reputation for being efficient due to horn-loading but they have been known to inflate their numbers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k...A_I&t=360s

It's funny how you claim you have calibrated ART for others and have an ART license yourself. If you've truly been in the weeds with ART, then you know that it's doman is only between 20 Hz and 150 Hz. You would also know that a traditional crossover doesn't apply w/ART and you therefore can't count on the traditional offloading to a SW below a certain frequency to save your amp. As an example, I've attached the impedance curve for the KEF Reference 2 Meta speaker. If you follow the red curve (impedance), you'll see that the speaker is generally in the 4 ohm to 3.3 ohm range going from 20 Hz to 150 Hz. This would be murder on this speaker under the current limp mode AVR lineup were it to theoretically run ART! Now imagine you had multiple of these type of speakers in your home and you don't assign the "proper" level of speaker support and you are already into clipping and damaging equipment! Ask again why the current lineup can't do ART, further tanking your credibility! You can "cheat" a bit under low impedance w/a traditional SW crossover because you offload quite a bit of work outside of the AVR. Under ART and demanding too much speaker support (which CAN happen), you'll easily tell the "good enough" AVRs from the robust design AVRs. This will be obvious once limp mode disappears from the 2027 Onkyo lineup...
Oh geez talk about getting into the weeds!!!

Clearly you don't understand how ART works/does!
You should have already gone through the "weeds" for ART.
You don't have to rerun calibration for it!

You do understand that speaker wouldn't come close to 20hz right!
IF you have several(or just a pair), yes very good idea to have a sub(s) if you want to worry about what happens with 20hz content!

If you believe all this.... hmmm maybe you skip ART & stick to DLBC!
Especially since it does most of the work & you can "cheat"!

The irony here is, like this whole limp mode issue.
The people needing to get into the weeds with Dirac are the same, I measured and there is an issue.
TBH what Dirac's RC does, doesn't show up on some measurement!

Kind of ridiculous. $450 is very cheap for this, but it wasn't an instant buy and I mulled it over. I think the cheapest it's been is $100 more.

Well not that simple.

Assisted two brothers, one had Emotiva Airmotiv XT3 setup with a RZ50.
Brother followed suite with Airmotiv XT1 setup & this unit.
If there was supposed to be some limp mode kick in at some watt number, none of us ever heard it happen.
Those speakers aren't the most efficient and tend to like power.

Plenty of other owners that didn't either & they all don't have Klipsch.

Yeah, I really didn't think it was an error. I figured they were clearing out stock before discontinuing it on their website.
I also got the cancellation email so I guess it's back to the waiting game.

RZ50 doesn't have the limp mode issue tho. It's one that's notorious on the TX-NR7100. Which is why if you look at the specs on the RZ30 it's nearly identical to the 7100 because they fixed the issue with a similar newer model in the same range .

Unfortunately it does, you can read about in Amir's review.

In the conclusion he says:
"The amplifier has serious power limiting "feature" and even without it, it is not competitive with other products out there"

It does have it according to Amir's testing
I owned the RZ50 for a couple of years and never had an issue
I dont see it in the owners forum either and some of those folks have owned the RZ50 since its release in 2021 on AVS forum

However..just like many of these reviews they dont consider the price point of what they are reviewing

In the real world, I doubt anyone expectations of a $450 AVR fall anywhere near Amir's testing

This goes for the same of the Onkyo RZ30 and Denon X3800, which also failed in Amir's testing

Warren, I like how you keep lumping the 3800 w/the rest of the PAC failures as opposed to using Amir's "do not recommend". You even have some SD members thinking the 3800 has the limp mode as well. Bravo for your perfect facist techniques! As long as you keep spreading your propaganda, I'll use the following to copy and paste perfection.

Reason for Amir's "do not recommend":

Onkyo 7100 – "The TX-NR7100 delivers "OK" performance across my tests. The problem as I have noted in previous reviews of this shared platform between Onkyo/Pioneer is this severe power limiting mode. I have to think it is there to pass UL regulatory tests and hence the reason it doesn't even tell you that it has gone into this "limp" mode. Naturally there is no mention of it and even searching online won't clue you in this problem."
https://www.audiosciencereview.co...iew.56300/

Onkyo RZ50 – "The amplifier has serious power limiting "feature" and even without it, it is not competitive with other products out there. Company can and should do better than this. I am confident a clean up pass with measurements can produce a better product. For too long review sites have done such a cursory job here as to allow these practices to continue. Hopefully that era is behind us. I know a number of companies are taking this domain seriously like the companies did in 1970s. So if Onkyo doesn't get with the program, it will fall behind."
https://www.audiosciencereview.co...avr.30842/

Pioneer 505 – "The VSX-LX505 produces average performance in DAC department for an AVR. But fails on multiple fronts in amplification. No way should an AVR amplifier have any kind of timer to reduce power. This is the third Pioneer AVR I have tested to do this and is totally unacceptable. I can see this helping them with power dissipation and unit reliability but it better be told to the potential customers. FYI when my own Pioneer AVR did this, I sent a link to the review to the support line of the company and did not receive any response. So I am not hopeful that they care either."
https://www.audiosciencereview.co...iew.40731/

Onkyo RZ30 – "What can I say. Nothing all that good. The power limiting alone is enough to make my blood boil. Do their product marketing people know what the engineering has done? Do they care? Even ignoring that, performance is average at best for a brand that thinks it is better than average."
https://www.audiosciencereview.co...iew.71594/

Denon 3800 – "I had high hopes going into this review thinking the company had seen the advantage its superior objective measurements in the past and would try to capitalize on them. Sadly, the reverse seems to be true with the DAC section taking a large step backward. Considering that the 3800 costs $500 more than 3700H, this is very surprising to me. Yes, inflation has a lot to do with that but surely the eye needed to be focused on making sure they at least met the same level of performance as last generation.

The good news is that the amplifier seems to be same design as last generation and has only taken a small hit."
https://www.audiosciencereview.co...iew.38574/

Guess which AVR doesn't have power limiting, is compatible w/the grueling requirements of Dirac ART, has an inaudible SINAD reduction from the prior gen, and whose value has only increased over time? That's right, the 3800! If your definition of "failure" is being in such high demand that you no longer see them on SD due to being 2-3x the price of these limp mode AVRs, then D&M is failing all the way to the bank!
