I ordered this from Best Buy and I've had it for a few days. The sound quality is pretty good for the price, but I'm no audiophile. It doesn't have a battery, so it's not a portable CD player, it's more of a compact CD player that is easy to transfer. I use it in the living room with some powered speakers and then move it to my bedroom and use it with headphones. Its built-in headphone amp is able to power the Senheisser HD 600, so I don't need an external headphone amp. It comes with a manual, remote controller, and USB A to C cable. It does not come with a USB A power adapter and it needs 5v with at least 2amps. Make sure you order a USB A power adapter that's 5v with at least 2 amps if you don't have one. I use my iPad charger to power it up and it seems to work fine. It also doesn't come with an aux cable or optical cable, so you may want to pick some up if you need them.
Can anyone tell me why this is needed? Should I pull like 10-11 of these drives out of the old desktops in my parents' attic and head to ebay?
If you have a stereo system and want to listen to CDs, this is a very well designed digital transport for cheap. It measures very well for that purpose whereas many others do not because of engineering flaws. The HPA is mediocre.
The One-Touch ripping feature is interesting, however, without internet lookup, I assume the tracks would be without any information. My go-to is still Classic Windows Media Player to rip CD into my library.

Windows Media Player no longer downloads metadata from the internet. Microsoft shut that down.
I mean you could if you don't mind what that would look like. Also doubt the sound quality would be that great and wouldn't you also need a sound card and power supply? Likely would have more than $119 into it.
I think you missed their sarcasm on this one.

because millennials have "discovered" CD's just like the "discovered" vinyl they have decided that streaming and not owning your media is a bad thing as places like Sony move away from media and have randomly changed TOS to make it so digital media purchases, you suddenly no longer 'own" so they are moving to a physical media. this is also why Amazon keeps hyping 40 year old CDs like Metallica Ride the lightning for 5 bucks. I own that sucker on Vinyl, but the kids are just now moving out of mom and dad's and they found out they don't get custody of the media library.
The year people are starting to realize that buying physical media once that you can own and play forever is preferable to paying eternal subscriptions to services that will gradually but inevitably get both more expensive and worse.

Having said that, much cheaper ways to burn and listen to your audio...but this is a very nice device

thats always been there for cds, streaming took people away still.
but perhaps inevitably, the greed took over in subscription prices once they got us...
and the populus showing a little revolt in owning their media again, with sources in higher fidelity than streaming.
