BougeRV's 23 quart 12 volt car refrigerator stands out as a compact travel fridge for road trips, tailgating, camping, and keeping drinks, formula, or even insulin cold without ice. It chills quickly, holds around 32 to 37 degrees in real use, and can run for hours from a small battery or a vehicle power source. The main caution is airflow, especially in a Model Y sub trunk, where keeping the lid open or using risers matters and extreme heat can hurt performance. It is also heavy, lacks a built in battery, and a few long term reliability issues were reported.

  • The fridge can maintain cold temperatures in a closed Tesla Model Y sub-trunk during 90°F days.

  • The unit can chill drinks quickly and hold around 32°F after being left in a vehicle.

  • Using a portable 12V power source can keep items cold or frozen without dealing with ice and melted ice.

  • The built-in cooler lid and structure can feel very strong for boat placement and added topper support.

  • Sub-trunk placement can require risers for air circulation and may still fail to keep food below 60°F in 100°F+ conditions.

  • Enclosing a powered cooler in a sub-trunk can increase power use and shorten compressor lifespan due to limited vent airflow.

  • The version without a built-in battery can take up extra SUV trunk space when paired with a portable battery cube.

  • Extended warranty coverage may be important for hot climates because compressor or circuit board failures have reportedly occurred.

I bought this fridge way back in 2024 for my Tesla Y. I leave it in the tailgate running 24/7, Luckily I Bought the 3 year warranty on the fridge because I already had 2 break. (1 due to compressor failure, the other due to circuit board failure) I don't think it's possible for any manufacturer to make a reliable 12v that will last in 95 degree Florida heat. Also yes, I always have my cabin temperature protection set to 95 degrees as well as making sure nothing ever blocks the vents. Just buyer beware to never buy this without an extended warranty if you live in a hot climate

I've had this for exactly two years and it's fantastic. The only "issue" of any sort that I've had is discovering that a standard one gallon milk jug can't fit in it upright, but that's more of bad planning on my part than an issue with the cooler.

My wife is nearly the same - can't imagine being without it and finds it so useful but I'm pretty sure when I first bought it she was rolling her eyes. Lol
Any battery?

This is the most brilliant purchase you will ever make! Add whatever battery you like and you're keeping the cold things cold (or frozen). Mine is usually full of dairy or soda or water. Just depends on what we are doing. I don't have to deal with Ice and melted ice (sometimes condensation happens) but it pays for itself on adventures.

Use this in the sub trunk in my model Y. Works perfectly in the Arizona heat. Just need to keep the lid to the trunk up for airflow. This is my 2nd summer using it and it keeps everything at 37 where I set it.

Probably good for a day trip, but I find even my 40L cooler is completely full for a 2 day family camping trip, and that's with food only and no beverages.

So what product do you use to keep this from sliding around in the trunk?

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I picked up the 30qt VIP version directly from the vendor for about $100 more. I wanted the slightly bigger size and cooling efficiency for my trip.. otherwise this is a pretty good deal.

Been watching this for a little bit and finally pulled the trigger for the sub trunk of our Model Y. Looking forward to using it on a few trips and tailgating. Already plan to precool it the night before use on AC power and put in precooled food/drink for the best results I hear. Any other helpful tips appreciated.
Went with the 30QT version, and it still "fits" in the Model Y sub-trunk. The trunk floor sits about an inch higher with it covered, but I actually think that extra gap helps with airflow. Overall, I'm happy with it—more storage space and better ventilation.
