Thanks for looking that up and sharing. 5.5# is a little much for a 2p backpacking tent.
However it's Sea to Summit so quality for sure.
Yeah, I put that stat out there without judgement because different people have different tolerances for what's an acceptable weight for a tent of a given size/capacity. A lot also depends on the intended usage. Some people want a small tent but have no intention of carrying it on their back.
Price is also a factor, obviously. You can get a 2 person tent from companies like Nemo or Big Agnes that only weigh 2 - 2.5 lbs. But they'll set you back $500.
I'm looking for a tent that's good enough and big enough for my son and I to camp in the backyard
Don't buy this. Get a cheaper Coleman or similar from a big box store. This is at a quality above where real outdoor use justifies the cost. Even at $150... That's a bit more than you need to be spending for simple backyard camping with your son.
Happy camping!
Regarding weight while backpackng, for the price the weight is not terrible if you're splitting the components among both people sleeping in the 2p tent. Freestanding, no sleeves to fish poles through, 3 season fly. Pretty decent if you aren't backpacking the thing solo. For car camping and short hike camping this thing is a winner for the price. If I didn't already have three 2p tents I'd probably buy it.
I love this brand. I think they have the best engineers and designers in outdoor gear. This is a large 2p tent and probably is meant for entry level backpacking where people still want their gear inside the tent or a pup, so the weight is great for the price if you account for that.

Everyone I know with this brand's products rave about it. I purchased a bag for wet stuff for a beach trip and loved it. Great quality.
