I wonder since this launched Sept of 2022 if a G2 is going to come out in the next year or so. I've been debating on getting this one for a travel lens, the 28-200 just doesn't have the reach sometimes. Knowing full well this is significantly heavier than the 28-200.

Decent price on this lens though.

I trialed the 25-200mm g2 on my last trip to Japan. Best single lens travel setup under $1k (lens only) that I've used. Unless you have specific use cases for >200mm zoom, the 25-200mm will cover everything you need in a lighter, smaller, and faster form factor

I almost always want more reach. Next lens goal is Sony's 400-800 to replace the Tamron 150-500 I currently use. On vacations I purposely seek out nature. The 28-200 did fine in Thailand back in 2024. My A7iii's shutter broke the 2nd day there 😂 😢. Got it fixed by Sony in 2 days over there though.

Sounds like you know what you need then! I love my Sony 100-400mm but I'll never travel with it. I'm headed to Thailand in 2027 and plan to pick up the 25-200mm before then.

I'm going back to Thailand and then to Japan in October/November. Thailand was great. I was hoping to have picked up a new body (debating a7rVI or a7V) and possibly that Sony zoom (not for traveling), but both of my dogs needed surgery in less than a month so no new gear for me.

You could turn on APS-C and turn it into a 300mm when you need that extra length. Just an idea.

Yep, I do that too, even with my 150-500. Plus cropping in edit, which is why I'm debating on going with the a7rVI instead of the A7V. Either should be a significant auto focus improvement vs my a7iii though.

I am also dealing with the same body decision as you. Currently an a7iii shooter as well.

Do you use it for work at all or is it a hobby camera?

I'm leaning towards the A7V. You can save a few hundred bucks with an offer on Greentoe.

100% hobby. People keep telling me I need to do paid gigs but I have no desire to do that. I suck at valuing my time and I don't know how to do event photos properly. I just get lucky doing family events, it's family they don't care. Well maybe some do with the weird faces I capture haha. I bought my a7iii used in March of 2023. It's by no means a slouch, but again I think the autofocus improvements will benefit me. Originally I was going to go with the a7V because the R series allegedly had some downfalls vs the normal alpha series. From all the reviews I've read and watched those have been fixed on the rVI. Sucks that ram prices are beyond out of control because I'd need to upgrade my SD cards too, ideally I'd go to the CFExpress card. I've bought a couple lenses off of greentoe. No clue why I didn't buy all of them and the body off there, sometimes I'm dumb.

If you're just doing this as a hobby you have no need for the R version. You're mainly paying to go up to 66.8mp or whatever sensor.

If you have no need to do huge prints or billboards.. then go for the A7V. That's a great hybrid choice to also do high quality video without breaking the bank.

Also if buying new cards is a concern you'd fill them up faster using the A7R VI with such high megapixels.

It looks like $2499-2599 would be accepted on Greentoe for the A7V.

What happens if you slap this on a A6700 APSC body? I assume some the extra 50mm of reach, and edge to edge sharpness would be the gain vs the heavier body compared to the Sony 70-350?

Yeah, the only reason for the R is because I do crop heavily so the extra pixels would help there. One day I'll do prints just to hang up around the house or give as gifts, but the V should be fine for that.

New cards are only a concern currently because of the asinine prices thanks to stupid AI BS. Same reason why I'm not building a new PC this year.

If I'm doing my math correctly it'll turn into a 75-600mm for you. Should be the same as me using it with APS-C mode turned on with my full frame. So more than just the 50mm of reach. It'll be an extra 250mm on the long end. Unless the 70-350 you're talking about is also a full frame lens, which would turn that into a 105-525mm on an APS-C camera.
