This portable AC is best as a temporary or backup cooling option for rooms where a window unit is not possible, especially in apartments or HOA settings. It has cooled master and medium bedrooms, a small apartment, and a 250 square foot room, with long term use showing easy cleaning and no routine draining thanks to the auto clean and evaporation through the exhaust. The main drawback is the single hose design, which is widely described as less efficient than dual hose units and slower to cool. Setup also matters, since sealing the exhaust hose can be the hardest part.

Common Questions (5)

  • Single-hose portable ACs are less efficient because they exhaust indoor air and can pull hot, humid air back in, while dual-hose units cool more efficiently and may save on electricity. This unit can still be useful for temporary cooling, emergency backup, or when a window unit is not possible.

  • It often does not need draining because the unit auto-cleans and dries itself out, and some owners report never draining it over years of use. In very humid conditions, drainage may still be needed.

  • It can cool a medium bedroom or small apartment well, with one owner saying it cooled a master bedroom and another saying it worked great in a small apartment. It may take around 30 minutes to bring a room down to temperature.

  • Yes, it is a practical option when window units are not allowed or not possible, and it is not noticeable from the street. It is also useful as a temporary or backup cooling solution.

  • Proper exhaust hose setup matters a lot for performance, and sealing the hose can be the hardest part of installation. Some owners tape the air tube to improve the seal each spring.

So if I use this in a new, well-insulated, sunroom, with the sliding glass interior door open, it should pull some cool air from the house and thus cool the room fairly quickly and efficiently?

How does it drain water? We just returned a midea one because the drain was at the very bottom of the unit so had to elevate it just so it could drain into a container
Doesn't need to drain if the unit operates normal

Strongly recommend a dual hose unit over a single hose unit like this.

Best deal atm seems to be this refurb Hisense on eBay for $199.99...

https://slickdeals.net/f/19752249-refurbished-with-2-yr-warranty-hisense-dual-hose-8-000-btu-doe-smart-portable-air-conditioner-w-inverter-199-99-fs-ebay?v=1

Interesting to see how much more efficient a dual hose unit is when comparing these 2...

This single hose "12,000 BTU" unit only effectively cools at 7000 BTU (see the "DOE" BTU rating in specs)

Hisense dual hose "10,000 BTU" unit cools effectively at 8000 BTU DOE.

Essentially this single hose has 12k BTU of "raw" cooling capacity, but also heats the room by 5000 BTU, while the Hisense has 10k BTU of "raw" cooling capacity but heats the room by 2000 BTU.

Portable ACs by their nature will spill some heat into the room, but the single hose is much worse since it exhausts interior air, causing hot, humid, outdoor air to be drawn back inside to replace it. (anything that exhausts air causes an equal amount of air to be drawn back in, from somewhere.)
The Hisense unit also has inverter, which is a crucial factor in energy saving.
Inverter models use a variable-speed compressor that slows down or speeds up to maintain a constant temperature, whereas non-inverter (fixed-speed) units constantly cycle entirely on and off, which uses more energy.
I bought this Hisense unit last month. It worked pretty well in my 250 sqft room. The only complain is lacking mobile app, unlike Midea brand.

Good for HOA's that don't allow window units. Not noticeable from the street. I have single hose, works great.
I'm in that situation and it takes 5 minutes to put my 5000BTU window unit in the room where I sit, instead of running the central AC all day when it's unusually hot for a few days. Then I take it out back out. I can put it in any room. I'd like to get one of these. Just wondering how long it takes to waste as much money in electric bills with a single hose unit than I'd spend extra on a double hose.

But, if you order the reviews by Most Recent, it's quite scary.

I have a hisense dual hose 8000btu portable AC in my garage. It has 2 main problems: doesn't seem to cool down the temperature at all if the outside temperature is 90+...inside temp stays around 83-84 even on max setting for hours. 2nd problem is that it keeps triggering the GFCI switch and I can't plug it in my power station during an emergency either because it keeps shutting off, probably for the same reason as it keeps kicking off the GFCI circuit. I have it working fine now by using an extension cord to a non GFCI outlet. Are these common problems or am I doing something wrong? Will the unit in this post have these problems?

Yes, that's exactly when the main reason for getting a dual hose is not so true: vacuum effect/sucking air from elsewhere. That's how it works in such arrangement, I use a similar single hose too, a separate hot room, which need some extra cooling. That extra air which is being sucked to the room is coming from the already air conditioned home. So, as an auxiliary device it would work fine.

im seeing specs report different SACC ratings. B&D says its just under 6000BTU.
Also, ratings on B&D website are pretty bad on this unit. https://www.blackanddecker.com/pr...n-OZyV-Rcr

It should be illegal to sell single hose units. Portable units are bad enough as it is.
It really should be illegal to sell single hose units. They pull out so much cold air out of the room it's crazy and super inefficient

Single-hose units are not the most efficient, but at this price every home with just a single central AC system should have one on hand. If the central unit goes out set up the portable, cooling emergency averted!

I agree with CleoThyme assessment. Dual hose is kind of important and would absolutely be mandatory at the original $500+ mrsp of this unit. They cited the refurbished hisense on ebay and I thought to share the refurbished midea at walmart for $250 that is a dual but in their mono design. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Restor...hbdg=L1102

Avoid. Single hose and no inverter, very inefficient. You can buy Midea 12000 BTU dual hose (2 hose in 1) inverter portable air conditioner for $50 more that has twice the efficiency, CEER 14 vs 7. The Midea cools much faster and will save about $20 a month on electricity.
