The TI 84 Evo is the newer graphing calculator update, with USB C charging and mostly the same core functions as other TI 84 models. It is framed as a practical school calculator for Algebra and Precalculus, and the familiar layout should make it easy to use alongside classroom instruction. The main concern is price, since the discount is seen as modest and the Evo is already showing up cheaper elsewhere. A solid refresh if the newer charging and small usability updates matter.
Students whose classes follow the standard TI-84 workflow, because the key functions are nearly identical and teachers usually teach with an 84.
College students who want a familiar graphing calculator with modern charging, because USB-C makes charging easier and the core functions stay the same.
Students who need a calculator that feels meaningfully different for Algebra or Precalculus, because the Evo does virtually nothing different at those levels.
The key functions are nearly identical across TI-84 versions, so students can use it much like an older 84. The Evo mainly adds user-experience updates and a bigger change from the CE than from the core TI-84 workflow.
Some comments point to new units on eBay for about $70-$80, which would make $97 look high. Others note that back-to-school pricing can keep both the Evo and CE on sale, so the value depends on whether you want the newer model now.
It can be used on tests where the TI-Nspire CX is not allowed, including the ACT. That makes it a safer choice for students who need one calculator that works in class and on exams.
I just grabbed this yesterday. Kid's school supply list is already out. Supposed to be a nice upgrade from the 11 year old CE.
Most teachers are still telling kids to get the old 84 CE. The fact that everyone is discounting the brand new Evo so much is telling...it is not selling.

This is the calculator I'd get my children if they needed one (we have a TI-Nspire CX and an older 84). The Nspire is great but can't be used on every test (e.g., ACT) and requires the user to figure out how to do things because teachers usually teach with an 84. Figuring out how to do things is better long-term for retention, however, than just following the teacher. It's not for everyone though.
This 84 Evo has USB C charging, which makes life much easier when needing to charge it. It also apparently makes some important user experience updates and is a major update to the old 84, which wasn't much changed over its history.

Remember Hewlett Packard Calculators? I had one that could do Calculus and do Integral and Derivative. It sure helped me in my Calculus class! Back then 40 years ago it was $350

And probably the same cost for 1 semesters tuition. Nice trade off instead 10k per semester

I still have mine that had RPN. Still works great.

Common Questions (4)
Yes. The TI-84 Evo charges with USB-C, while the older TI-84 CE uses mini-USB. That makes charging easier and avoids needing the older cable type.
