but you spend double this price on costway. i think if you have to crack this thing open you find all the parts are the same or generally the same/commonplace.

I love how cheap and ubiquitous these are getting, but the problem I have is my house is brick exterior and drilling through that is a one shot deal to get it right.

Besides Mr. Cool units (there may be some others that mimic their lineset fittings), all units are installed similarly. They come with flared linesets that connect with basic wrenches. After ensuring that the lines are properly connected (which creates a sealed system) a vacuum pump must be connected to a port on the outdoor unit, and the linesets and indoor unit are "pumped down", removing all air/contaminants from the linesets. The vacuum pump is disconnected and the valves on the outdoor unit are opened, allowing the refrigerant charge to enter the lineset/indoor unit.

The vacuum pump/gauge set are the components that prevents most handy homeowners from easily installing their own minisplit. I would also recommend that DIY'ers get themselves a set of flexible bending inserts, that makes it much less likely that they'll kink and damage the linesets when installing. These can be found on Amazon for <$30.

Do you have a recommended vacuum pump / gauge set?

I think you'll be fine with just about any you'll find. Considering it's probably only ever going to be used a couple of times at most in its life, I think even a cheapo $40 vacuum pump on Amazon or from Harbor Freight will be fine. Same goes for gauges.
