For 2022, I think that is expensive. At least M3 or M4 at this price point.
A new 12.9" iPad Pro with 512GB (the minimum one should buy) is $1699. $679 for an M2 (which is still very hella fast) for someone that just wants a 12.9" iPad Pro is saving $1000. That seems like a great deal to me! Not so much if you have to have the latest-greatest. But for, say, the artist in your family, this would be perfect.
Amazon had the 13" air m4 256gb for about $840 which I bought for my wife. I think an m2 will still be fine for quite some time though. I don't think I would want a refurb ipad for her though...

I get that logic doesn't always apply when we talk about the pricing of Apple products, but we're talking about a 4-year-old and used piece of technology. A 4-year-old used iPhone is going to fetch ~20-30% of its original price.

It's two generations old and an M2 is still more power than most people need. It comes with a guaranteed LIKE NEW condition and a 365 day return policy. It's $680. If you are in the market for a 12.9" iPad Pro and don't want to spend $1700 on a new one, what would you recommend to a friend or family member to buy instead, especially when most people would use for media, email, drawing, games, etc.?

The 13 inch M5 iPads can be found for less than that.
Either way, the biggest concern is how Apple is going all in on AI, and that this was designed and sold before then. We don't know what Apple will do to nerf these devices like they've nerfed the Apple Watch series. I bought a new M4 iPad 13 inch last year for $850, I'd expect an M2 to be closer to $500.
Amazon renewed is a scam and any individual who tries the same would be locked up in prison. Just look at the so called conditions classes if the renewed. It's basically used conditions with nothing actually refurbished or renewed.
my ipad pro bricked at at regular IOS update. And apple store declared it to be dead. I wont spend 700 for a used ipad. Why not get an macbook air? ( considering the keyboard is another 2-300 usd)
biggest issue i have is the ipad pro i got is expired warranty looks like 2024 it expired & there's no way to renew applecare or anything. so if anything happens to this ipad you'd be out $679+
