This 8 inch digital caliper stands out for cheap, practical measuring, especially when fractional, metric, and imperial readings all matter. It gets praise for tread depth work, building projects, and general shop use, and the included spare battery is a nice touch. The main drawback is battery drain, since the LR44 powered unit may not fully power off and can wake from small movement, so storage habits matter. Shipping can also take about a month, making it a handy budget tool if you can live with that quirk.

Should one get this over a rechargeable one? Amazon seems to have USB rechargeable ones for comparable prices.

Sneezing turns mine back on. Not literally (maybe).
That's the issue, a small vibration will cause it to sense a tiny change in measurement and turn it on. I have one on my desk that does this any time I bump into my desk.

Anyone know if it's made in Taiwan or China?

Just lock it in place before storage and this becomes a non issue. Just my experience
Just rewire it to take AAA batteries, sure it makes it a lot more bulky, but hey it'll last better!

The same design is sold by other china makes. Yes, it eats batteries since the unit never truly powers off completely, only the display does. But you can find affordable generic type batteries in bulk packaging that are more than good enough to last you for years.

I have these and I'm happy with them. No doubt better ones but I paid close to this price and haven't had any issues. Had them over a year now. Got a peacock analog one recently and very good quality but have to learn how to use them

This one takes an LR44 battery. Generally speaking these low cost LR44 powered digital calipers all have the same parasitic power drain and the battery will invariably die within a few weeks to months. If you get this one, remember to always take out the battery when you aren't using it and it should be fine.Other calipers that use a coin style battery (2025/2032/etc) don't appear to suffer from this issue, but are harder to find and generally cost more.
I purchased the 6" version of these calipers in February and have not experienced a parasitic draw.

I got this one, that seems to be identical. Haven't used it for long yet, but no issues so far. I wanted one with fractions for building construction use. https://www.amazon.com/VINCA-DCLA...T1zcF9hdGY

I'd just get Pittsburg caliper from harbor freight. These cheap calipers are all the same. I buy them to grind into dumb little special measuring tools. (Am a machinist)

People keep mentioning parasitc power draw in storage The harbor freight micrometer in my tool box has been on the same battery for close to a decade and has been accurate enough for my use.
Yeah same and I went and checked and the 10 dollar cheapo plastic one uses a 2032 battery. I have a zillion dead calipers from over the years and they all took lr44's.

I've had one of these for a few years now and I've only replaced the battery once. Maybe I have one that was accidentally built properly. It's been pretty great for my use.
