Cons: fan can be noisy under load unless power is restricted in BIOS. Sometimes won't wake from sleep (requires a total power cycle - pull power plug and plug in again).

I wouldn't say it was a walk in the park getting everything working. But a lot of that was related to passing the GPUs thru to a VM.
In the end, it enabled me to use a pair of 400W-500W PSUs I had lying around. And I didn't have to worry about fitting these giant GPUs and their coolers in a case. I've since moved on to using an open chassis and purchased an 850W PSU so that everything is a bit less complicated and less sprawling. But OCuLink did provide a way for me to test out using the Teslas before diving in.
It would make a beast pfSense or OPNsense router. Handle multiple VPNs with ease.

If you need 12 or more cores, or need a ton of RAM that went last two slots, that's the only case when the tower setup makes more sense in 2026. Whos using 5.25 drive bays or a ton of expansion slots these days?

I allocated about 16GB of the 24GB memory to VRAM from the bios, leaving 6GB for the Proxmox LXC (with 2GB for the Proxmox host). Surprisingly, the Proxmox helper script installed the Vulkan drivers and mostly everything worked right away. A few models like like gemma4:12b kept getting cut off midway when responding. I also tested installing Ollama and Open Web UI bare metal onto Ubuntu, but it took more configuration. Gemma4:12b worked fine after that. If you don't mind waiting a few minutes for AI responses, then it works. My use case is for privacy and local AI batch processing with Paperless-ngx.
For my second Aoostar, I installed Bazzite (Plex like interface for games) and can now easily access all the free Steam, Epic, and Gog games I collected here from Slickdeals over the years. I also installed the Switch emulator inside Bazzite and EmuDeck and tested a few games and they work great.
If you just want to use for chat, this system should mostly keep up with human reading speeds or better. It won't quickly dump a bunch of text that you can instantly scan like a cloud model.

You are not gong to like this... But, from all my research and experience... all these systems have the same issue... it is heat and cheap mobo's. Right now for the price... there really is only one mini pc, the cheapest I would buy and that is the Acemagic F5A housing the Ryzen 7 255. It sells for 589 and includes the 255, 24LPDDR, 1TB HD and it sells for $590.. the thing is, I feel this system may actually last many years and will never overheating. This is just food for thought.
So even if your budget is $350... IMHO, you still can find a 780m GPU mini PC. Just be patient and search every day.

The 780m is at most 20% faster than the 680M in this. And that speed is lost with low spec RAM or low TDP/throttling.
This has LP 6400mhz and TDP settings up to 70w with a vaporchamber cooling solution. It'll be just fine.
