I would recommend going stainless steel. While cast iron seems good, when all you're using this for is pressing down, you don't want to deal with seasoning and maintain cast iron

Would it need to be seasoned and maintained like a cast iron pan since food won't be cooked on the press. More of a weight to keep food flat in the pan so it is evenly cooked.

I have had this for a couple of years now. Works well for bacon. Will cover the cooking suface of a 10 inch pan. It covers enough of a 12 inch pan to cook bacon. Keep up has been simple. I wash it with soap and water, rinse and then heat up on the stove burner to make sure it's 100% dry. No issues with it and still looks new outside some minor burn marks on the wooden handle. Could work for burgers, but the bottom is not flat. It has groves in it.

This is designed to keep bacon and burgers flat while cooking (would also work nicely if you fry bologna). It is not intended to make smashburgers. For that application, you should use a large stainless spatula along with another kitchen tool of your choice (I use a meat tenderizer) to apply pressure to the burger meat as you smash it.
1. You get grease splatter on your hand/arm more easily.
2. You still need a device to press down directly on top of the spatula or else your patty isn't the same width...lopsided.
3. Round is good for round pans and you can probably do 3 sliders or 2 burgers at once in a large skillet.
4. Look cooler pressing with one hand.

I think you could just wipe it and put it away. The grease is already there. There shouldn't be food baked on.

As for this, I've had a stainless one since last year, and it is a game-changer for burgers and steak for searing. I wish I had bought it years ago.
