This 52 inch Royal Star ceiling fan is a basic, old school five blade model that stands out mainly for its low price and simple installation options. It has no light, which explains the bargain pricing, though a light kit can be added and the instructions show it can even be mounted without the downrod by attaching the canopy directly to the motor. The AC motor is the main tradeoff, since newer fans often include DC motors, remotes, and dimmable lights. It fits best as a straightforward fan when you want airflow more than extras.

Common Questions (3)

  • No, this model has no light kit, which is why it is priced lower. A light can reportedly be added later, but the fan is sold as a no-light version.

  • It uses an AC motor, not a DC motor. That means it can work with smart switches for speed control, but it may be noisier and less efficient than newer DC-motor fans.

  • Yes. The installation instructions indicate it can be mounted without the included downrod by screwing the ceiling canopy directly to the motor.

AC motor. No reason to buy a ceiling fan that doesn't use a DC motor.

Think I found a listing for this fan at Amazon. Only 1 review, and it's dated Oct 25, 2014.

Thanks for pointing this out. After doing a little research, besides the higher energy cost to run the fan, sound would be my bigger concern as ac motor will generate more noise (high speed on and shutdown vs ramp up and down with dc motor).

Great price for the fan. It's great if you don't run it often as someone said earlier.

Smart switches require ac motors to control the speed of the motor. I've got 3 fans upstairs that are wired together so being able to control the speed that way is a plus.

If you can hear the ac motor over the general noise of the fan blade you have a defective unit.

Darn I wish this was flushed mount.
Page 5 of the instructions indicate that this can be mounted without the included downrod; the ceiling canopy can be screwed directly to the motor.

This is a good deal for a fan. The problem I have is I will only buy a smart fan that can be controlled by voice. Even remotes get lost so that is the only fan I will consider. Guess I am getting lazy.

Not sure on modern fans but my 1996 fans still work great and not that noisy. Doubtful they are dc. Dc requires an extra part to split the sine wave. Wonder why all the new washers and dryers fail? Partially because they use DC. When the inverter box fails and it's 500 bucks...landfill fodder. Don't know old school. If the bearings and everything are solid a good purchase. My prior dwelling 1986 fans still rolling.
