I did this with a 5 ton Carrier traditional condenser unit at my old house. Brazed the linesets on, cracked the low side and opened up the high side. It pushed most of the air out and worked fine fer ten years!

I can see blowing out lines working for new installs but I would never do it on repair work. An old system holding vacuum prevents wasted refrigerant.

Did you know PROPANE actually works better than r12 in the old systems?

Why would you get a permit for s simple minisplit? these greedy building departments have enough money. THEY are part of the reason housing is so expensive. All they will do is increase yer property taxes

Likely used the purge "method". On a sub $400 unit with unknown control board and other parts availability down the line it's basically disposable. Got a leak? ... Well looks like we're using r-290 from now on...

I prefer to call it "R-290" it sounds more official. But absolutely yes it works fantastic and is super cheap. Impossible to get replacement parts and a slow leak? That's a job for R-290... top up as needed.

Pressure is a bit much on the high side, caused my compressor to shut off on hot days. Some people add isobutane, some run R152a instead (dust-off). If nothing else, it's a cheap way to pressurize the system while you look for leaks.

That sounds pretty good and fair. In my area Daikin and Mitsubishi single units average about $10k at the low end (parts + labor). It's highway robbery. My neighbor got two units installed for $30k on credit.

Asked electrician friend about this and was told anyone that comes up here thinking they'll undercut these guys and make a killing, quickly realize they can charge the same and still get jobs.

It'll only come down (over here) when people stop paying those ludicrous rates.

Depends on your state/county/city rules. Every single area is different. I moved from one state that repealed all HVAC licensing requirements due to a massive shortage of technicians and moved to a state that has more regulations for HVAC techs than a physician. After working two decades as a maintenance tech, residential HVAC is not rocket science. It is pure elementary when it comes to these mini splits. Just do the math if you have a long tubing run (we have to do the same thing for long runs for traditional AC units). You can "rent" a vacuum pump For free from AutoZone but you'll need an adapter for your connection. On Amazon for a few dollars.
