They run hot. I have one hooked up to my NAS, and the OS will turn the entire system off occasionally to prevent damage to the drives. Having all drives loaded can cause it to exceed safe operation temps. I had to use an external fan to assist with air flow and outer casing thermals. My NAS is Synology, I've had 10 bays used on it for 2+ years, and I never ran into a temp issue until hooking this up via USB.

This ORICO four bay USB 3.0 enclosure is best as a budget direct attached storage box for a single PC or mini PC, especially when you need extra 3.5 inch drive bays. It can work well for home server, media center, and backup use, with real world throughput likely around 250 megabytes per second or lower. The physical power switch is a useful touch for remote power control. The main cautions are heat and power behavior, since loaded drives can run hot, idle draw can stay around 30 watts, and this model has no hot swap or RAID.

$110 for the enclosure, $4000 for the drives.
Just buy the regular spinning rust and you should be good.

In case someone without a lot of computer knowledge might be on the fence about this....Real world max data throughput on this will likely be in the 250 MB/s or likely even lower range on a hard drive with decent cache.
This is about as good as you can get in this price range to connect to a PC with limited or no 3.5" drive bays unless you want to invest in an actual NAS setup to be able to connect to multiple computers.
I you intend to create a JBOD (just a bunch of disks) setup from HDD's rotated out of old rigs, this would do the trick on a dedicated machine.
Simply wanted to add one enthusiast's perspective should this enclosure hit someone's budget sweetspot.

I have a ton of Western Digital external hard drives (~10) but only a few are plugged into external USB hubs (MB ports are all in use). Should I consider getting this and shucking some of my external HDDs? They're ~8-10 years old and I haven't had 1 failure yet (knock on wood).

I have one of these hooked up to a mini PC (which I'm typing on now) that I use for small games, a home server, and a media center. It's wonderful and I highly recommend it. Have had zero problems

First of all, RAID = grandpa/irrelevant in 2026. Second, wasting an NVMe drive in a USB enclosure like this is an hilarious waste ESPECIALLY in 2026. Third, almost nobody actually needs an NAS, and it's a waste of tech/energy/effort. Your precious collection of movies that you watch once, are streaming online from the cloud anyway.

Last, this is the best non-NAS multi-bay enclosure because it has a physical power switch. That way, you can remote-access and control its on/off status using a smart plug (using caution of course with ejecting and so on).
Well well, YOUNGSTER, you gotta a lot of nerve spouting that bull. This thing is junk and I don't care how much you have invested in the company stock.

Is this good to dump photos on my phone to clear storage, or would yall recommend something different? Some more context, my parents only buy the 128gb storage phones, can I connect their phone to this and dump their photos and video to store in this or can you recommend something different?
128 GB is nothing for storage. TBH what you should do is pay for a cloud storage for phones. Gives. you continous backup from anywere on the planet, and a 2Tb plan will store plenty of photos. If iPhones, getting iCloud also gives you full backup of phones. Lose/break a phone? get a new one, restore from iCloud = like you never left.
