This Ryzen 5 5500, MSI PRO B550M VC WiFi, and 16GB DDR4 bundle is framed as a budget AM4 starter that can work well for everyday use, Linux workstations, and quiet builds. The main strengths are the B550M board's full length PCIe slot, the included WiFi, and enough bandwidth for mainstream GPUs, while the 16GB kit is the bigger Windows limit. The main drawback is the Ryzen 5 5500 itself, which lacks PCIe Gen 4 and is seen as less future proof than a 5600. Price also drew scrutiny, with comparisons to cheaper Micro Center bundles and a recent jump from $199 to $250.

Common Questions (4)

  • No. The Ryzen 5 5500 is PCIe Gen 3 only, so Gen 4 SSD benchmarks and other Gen 4-specific features are the main things you lose. For most GPU use, the difference is small, especially with mainstream cards.

  • Yes, the bottom three full-length slots are wired for x1 bandwidth, while the main slot has x16 lanes. That makes the extra slots useful for add-in cards, but not ideal if you need high-bandwidth expansion.

  • The 5600 is often viewed as the better buy for about $35 more because it avoids the 5500's PCIe Gen 3 limitation and has stronger future-proofing. The 5500 can still be fine for older GPUs and budget builds, but the 5600 is the cleaner upgrade.

  • Yes. The 5500 plus this micro-ATX board can make a quiet budget Linux workstation, and the extra slots can help for Proxmox even though the lower slots are only x1 wired. Undervolting and good case fans can also keep it quiet.

I'm going to repeat this to you. It's not a let down unless you are one of those people who is doing one of two things. You like running crystal bench on your pcie gen 4 ssds. OR you own an rtx 5090 because you spent all your money on the gpu and have nothing left over for the rest of the system. It's been proven that upto an rtx 3090 that pci express gen 3 is just fine and doesn't make any difference in performance.
I looked into this and yes you are 100% correct. The performance loss is very small. I should of specifically said a few things, and made sure people are aware.

My version of a "let down" is strictly only future proofing an older system.

Half the cache and stuck on Gen 3 isn't a big deal. But AMD cheaped out to save a few bucks (which saves us money too).

As long as the board has x16 slots, the gen 3 pcie support from the processor doesn't matter much. The bigger bottleneck is 16gb RAM on Windows. Makes a really nice budget linux workstation, though. If you get a good 5500 and case fans, you can undervolt it quite a bit to make a very quiet PC.

The mb has 4 pcie full length slot but with 3 x1 speed slots?
Yeah, if you zoom in on the mobo photo, you can see the contacts in the bottom 3 slots are only wired for X1. I've actually been eyeing this motherboard for a ProxMox build, and only have a 5500 to install, so I'll need to sacrifice a slot for a GPU, so the extra slots are helpful, but limited bandwidth.

No pcie gen 4 support means nothing in practice. Only those who want to see fast ssd benchmarks with their pci express 4 ssds. It doesn't matter on the gpu front. It's been proven upto an rtx 3090 its nearly meaningless. And a Ryzen 5 5500 will never get paired with something anywhere near as powerful.
ehh...why get stuck with PCIe lanes two generations behind when you can spend the extra $35 for 5600? Math bro.

At first I thought wow Walmart is getting in on the PC bundle game, but Newegg selling on Walmart makes sense.
Whats even better than not having to drive 4 hours through the epicenter of idiot and ahole drivers of the ATL an area that spans half the state to the closest Microcenter....If you are a member of the Walmart plus club, you can get a Spark delivery driver to drive to the store pick it up and drive 40 miles into the farmlands with the final 4 miles down a dirt and gravel road to deliver it right to your doorstep for "free" (walmart pays them $10). And you can watch then leave on their 40 miles return trip from the window... no contact or speaksies required

Curious if anyone would pay $60 for 64GB (4x16GB) of Corsair DDR4 CL18 3600MHz RAM...

They recently increased the price to 250 like a few weeks ago it was 199
That goes for all the combos. The 270K Intel combo was $550 and another for $600. $100 increases all around.

Can confirm 5500 vs 5600, no gen 4 support is a big let down. If you are sticking to really old GPU's that can be fine but the little bit of price increase is definitely worth it.
Gen 3 doesn't hold back a 6800XT. If you're pairing anything faster than that you'd be a fool.

No PCIe Gen4 support. Get a 5600 or better.
Don't tell me what to get. Now I'm gonna buy 4 of these just to show you you're not the boss of me.

This Motherboard has 16 lanes in the main pcie slot. A 9060 xt has 16 lanes. Even downgraded to pcie gen 3 you have a ton of extra unused bandwidth there.

I've seen tests done on Oculink connections which is the bandwidth equivalent to pcie 3 x 8 and you don't start seeing noticeable bottlenecks until you get to like a RTX 4080.

A $50 premium to not sit in traffic for 4-5 hours sounds well worth it
All custom pc nerds are required to take pilgrimage once in their lifetime to Microcenter.
I feel right at home whenever I'm inside the store.
