So, this is or isn't compatible with the inexpensive toner brands?
I'm seeing $125 for black on OEM, $100 each color OEM x 4 = $525 total toner replacement cost.
Depends on your definition of inexpensive, my Canon takes off brand and works fine, but even those off brands aren't dirt cheap, just much cheaper than the Canon ones. That being said I love my Canon laser, though im at work currently and not sure what model mine is, also think I paid less than 300 but it was at least a year and a half ago as well....
Only downside is that this is single side scanning. If that is good enough for people, then this isn't too bad of a deal.
It's a big downside. I use my 644 for double-sided scanning almost every week.
As for the toners, it's obscene how expensive OEMs are. ($525) The cheapo knockoffs all range from terrible to bad. They bleed color and leave streaks. I've managed to find one sort of reliable brand but even that is mixed and doesn't last long before it starts streaking again. On top of that, the printer keeps accusing you that the cartridges are counterfeit.
Don't update your firmware. I have a suspicion it causes counterfeit cartridges to streak and smear.

Replacement 075 cartridges pack of 4 (black cyan magenta yellow) cost from $120 to $150
I have a similar printer and it's rejecting generic brand ink toners I got from Amazon. I bought it from 2 diff vendors 075 but it's giving error in the printer and states it's not compatible. I just bought branded 075 inks finally from cannon $$
pretty expensive toner, a set costs $220, try to apply coupon to lower it.
also, for these printers - when it says it's empty - ignore it and click continue to print. I have been printing for 3 weeks on a supposedly "empty" black cartridge
I have used their laser toner for 2 years with no issue. just be very careful taking out the clear tape from a new cartridge, go slow, I had a little bit of toner spill out from one of the new cartridges when I opened it too fast.
I have a different printer but similar to this one and no issues. Here is my Amazon order for reference

I had one of these laser printers that I paid like $400 a couple of years ago. When the ink ran out, I bought a 3rd party one from Amazon. I ended up having to throw the printer away when the ink spilled red powder all over the inside of the printer.
