This 2TB Seagate Game Drive is a mechanical portable hard drive aimed at Xbox storage and game transfers, with a SATA to USB interface inside and a customizable RGB light strip. It works as a regular external drive on most computers, and it can be reformatted for Mac Time Machine backups. Xbox One and Xbox 360 games can run directly from it, while Xbox Series S and X games must be transferred. As a spinning hard drive, it will not match SSD speed and is better for loading gains than raw performance.

  • The drive can be used as a regular external hard drive for backups on compatible computers.

  • The enclosure supports SATA-to-USB operation, which helps it function like a typical external HDD.

  • Xbox One and Xbox 360 games can run directly from the drive without transferring them first.

  • The front light strip uses RGB and can be customized with Seagate software while retaining lighting behavior after reconnecting.

  • The drive is a mechanical hard disk rather than an SSD, so it will not deliver SSD-like performance.

  • Xbox Series S and Xbox Series X games require transferring to internal storage before playing.

  • Portable HDDs may use SMR and can feel slow, which can be a concern at this capacity.

  • An external 1TB drive used for games reportedly stopped working after a few years.

Can this act as a regular external hard drive for back ups?
Yes. I bought one for my wife's MacBook and we reformatted it as her Time Machine. Funny that this was the price like 5 years ago and now it's a good deal, but such are the times lol

Games won't run off this, right? Only for extra storage and moving games between externals and internal?
Games run on normal hard drives. It's more of a loading speed gain. I had an external 1tb connected and ran games fine. It eventually stopped working after a few years

I wouldn't buy lol. Just wait for memory prices to normalize. This is more than my 2TB external SSD.

I think he's referring to the newest Xbox, series x, which requires a proprietary (well was, now two companies make it i think?) ssd to store series x games and run them from it, iirc.

I have this from a couple years ago. The front light strip (shown as green in the images) is actually RGB and can be customized using Seagate's software. Saves on the controller firmware, so RGB carries if you unplug it and plug it in to something else
