I tried to play through a few years ago and kept getting hopelessly lost to the point I just quit playing. Someone recommended I use the in game signs (it's an office building which have signs to the various areas).....magically that solved my problem and just beat the game a few weeks ago. Apparently I just couldn't (literally) see the writing on the walls.
To be fair to myself, I was playing on the Steam Deck so the signs were a little less obvious then they'd be on a full sized monitor. Also the level design is still pretty convoluted and objective locations can be very vague. Still expect to refer to a wiki or walkthrough more than a few times. Great game and the combat is much better than 90% of 3rd person shooters.

I had a similar experience where it took me many years to get over my initial frustration. Not just getting lost but also because when you're lost enemies can randomly spawn and kill you, resetting you back to where you were!
The map in the game is notoriously bad. But I do suggest using it. And it's worth getting over the initial hump of frustration.
