I actually own the Lenovo iteration of this mobile controller (Legion Gamepad G7) which runs pretty good. Although, I bought mine on sale from AliExpress for around $40 all in, including taxes and shipping.

I bought the original version of this (USB C only). Was fine for using with a phone, but putting a tablet in it really sucked, and probably put a lot of strain on the USBC port. This is nice as its dual use.

I wonder if it can be modded in the same way so you can fit huge tablets?

It can be modded in the same way as the standard G8. The G8+ does expand a little wider though, so it naturally fits 8" tablets just fine.

The bonus with the G8+ is that you can use tablets in portrait orientation too, perfect for DS emulation and vertical shmups.

For larger tablets, you should buy the Lenovo G7. It's the same controller as the GameSir G8 (it doesn't have Bluetooth either), but it expands further to fit devices up to 9 inches like the iPad mini and Lenovo Y700.
