When I want one I usually just go to Goodwill. They usually have a large number, often appearing almost new. Usually about $15.

Had an extremely similar model for probably 10 years. Duplex printing is a must.

3rd party toner cartridges are super common on Amazon. I'm sure they vary in quality, but they're like 1/5th Brother price.
You don't have to be paranoid about toner running out with laser printers. It is nothing like inkjet printers. On my brother printers, generic toner cartridge usually last me years.

I have a variation of this printer and it has been great. I use it mainly for printing shipping labels. Probably printed like 1000 pages. I think it's jammed one time in 10 years.

I went with the generic cartridge cuz quality of prints doesn't matter for labels. The generic cartridges have minor flaws, but two for $15 I won't complain.

This one is wireless as well, which is nice. You can share it among multiple comps in your household without having to e-mail it over or connect it every time.

I was about to order this for my dad but reviews aren't good. Some say subscription is required, anyone dealt with this?
I have been using this one for light printing about 4 years and it works great. Buy aftermarket toner since that stuff is WAAAAY cheaper than OEM stuff and works equally as well. I looked up the price for 1 toner cartridge from Brother and it was $85 so I got a 2-pack of aftermarket toners from Amazon with greater printing capacity on sale for $22 lol! I removed the original starter cartridge even though it isn't empty yet just to try the aftermarket one to make sure it worked and it works fine so I'm using them first and keeping the partially used OEM starter cartridge if these ever fail or run out. They say they print around 2500 pages per cartridge and I print around 50-75 pages per year so I'm set for the rest of my life lol! Toner needs to be kept dry but I live in the desert with 12% average humidity so as long as I keep the partially used starter toner in an airtight container with silica beads to absorb any moisture it should be useable decades in the future.

Agree wholeheartedly. Lasers are actually a better option for people that do not print much because they do not dry out. You can go months without using a laser and it will still print just like it did the previous time. Toner for a laser is a dry powder that is "magnetized"(for lack of a better word) to the paper then fused into the paper. If you get a laser printed paper wet, it will not change the print. The paper literally has to disintegrate.
agree, like a copy machine, it uses electrostatic toner technology.
i dont recommend color laser tho, that's another scam, as you need 4 cartridges, CMYK.

I'm still using my HL-2280DW from 2013 I got through a deal here (for about the same price, ha ha)
As a poster above mention, look for aftermarket toners. I replaced the drum on mine once.

Heard good things about Brother, finally got an inkjet but I feel like the print empties pretty quickly. Wonder if I will see the same issue with this if I don't print that often?
It won't. Toner lasts a LONG time.

Oh I'm not. I wasn't paranoid with inkjet either. laugh out loud I've probably bought five 3rd-party toner cartridges, all from Amazon. While I think they fall a little short of their claimed pages printed, they're still far-and-away a better value than OEM. Zero difference in print quality.

I actually have both a color and a B&W one. I love both. The B&W Brother is nice and cheap, the color printer is an HP CP1525, it can print anything and it lasts forever. I've had the printer literally since 2010. I know the year because I wanted a printer to work with my brand new original iPad and the CP1525 was the only one on the market at the time. Anyway, I've only replaced the cartridges twice in 16 years. Also, you can replace individual cartridges. I love my color printer.
