They don't. They merely take room air to cool the compressor resulting in negative pressure. Not very efficient.

I have had a single hose unit from LG for about 3 years and it's actually not that bad. Cools the bedroom (20x12) almost instantly and evaporates just fine. I don't feel any hot air coming back into the room.

I bought this unit maybe 3 years ago and still good after moderate use. Only negative I have is that it's pretty loud
