From what retailer are you comparing this to? I bought this last year from Apple Refurbished for $3404 before tax.

Would this be better than the M5 Pro version but same build otherwise?

What is better in your eyes? M5 Pro likely is more efficient and longer battery, but the M4 Max likely will have a slight edge on CPU for some of the more power hungry applications.

I think m5 pro has the edge on cpu but m4 max dominates in gpu with more cores

Not a deal at this price. Would be a "decent" price for M5

on top of this, max has almost twice the memory bandwidth than the pro.

77% more in this case as we're comparing m4 max vs m5 pro

3 Year AppleCare+ plan adds $419 to the price. At $3,718 before tax, I gotta pass, not that I expect it to get any less expensive any time soon. At current 2026 prices, it's just difficult to justify.
